Ricardo Montalban, an actor well known for his work on screens both large and small, passed away Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 88 years old. To me, there are three Ricardo Montalbans. There's the white-suited Mr. Rourke, who had the most righteous wish-granting powers this side of Aladdin's lamp on Fantasy Island; there's the voice from the Chrysler commercials that could get even my dedicated Ford-driving great aunt to buy a Chrysler because that rich Corinthian leather just sounded sexy, and, probably closest to my heart, there was Khan. Pectoral-tacular, Captain Kirk-infuriating, best Star Trek villain ever, Khan. (And if you are a Trekkie who disagrees, just try yelling "Booooooooooooorg!" It doesn't feel quite right, does it?)
Born in Mexico on November 25, 1920 as Ricardo Gonzalo Pedro Montalban y Merino, Montalban's dark and mysterious looks won him a contract at MGM in the 1940s where he played a number of "Latin Lover" and ethnic roles. By 1947, he'd landed his first leading role opposite Cyd Charisse and Esther Williams in Fiesta. He worked in many films in the '50s and early '60s, eventually becoming quite active in TV, making appearances in everything from Ben Casey to The Man From U.N.C.L.E.. He began his work on Fantasy Island in 1977 and played the part through 1984, working overtime in 1982 for his part in The Wrath of Khan. Most recently, he portrayed the grandfather in Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams and Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, and appeared in the Disney Channel series Kim Possible. [Let's not forget his role as Vincent Ludwig in the first Naked Gun movie. Classic! - Zach]
Montalban was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Georgiana Young, and he will be missed. Go out today and huff the interior of a Chrysler or yell out a good long "Khaaaaaaaaaan!" in memoriam. I know I will.

Aw. Just the other day I caught an old episode of Fantasy Island and wondered what ol' Ricardo was up to.
