Rourke? Whitaker? The Expendables May Be the Best Movie Ever

It's hard to believe that a few years ago, Sylvester Stallone was pretty much off the radar, playing a villain in a Spy Kids movie with his glory days largely behind him. Now, after making another Rocky movie and another Rambo movie, all of a sudden everyone wants to work with him. (Let this be a lesson to all those actors out there who don't want to be in franchises.) As previously reported, Sly has written a new action movie for himself to direct and star in, and the cast he's assembled so far -- combined with the actors he's still going after -- is mind-bogglingly awesome.

In The Expendables (not to be confused with the six other movies and one surf band called "The Expendables"), Stallone plays the leader of a team of mercenaries who go on a mission to depose a vicious Central American dictator. The originally announced lineup of "expendables" included the far-from-expendable Jason Statham and the done-with-martial-arts-films Jet Li. That lineup alone was awesome enough, but then Stallone got Dolph Lundgren to join the squad, giving the world the Rocky IV reunion it wanted. But now the casting has reached Biblical proportions, if your Bible is made up of Academy Award lists. (If your Bible is "Great Action Films of the 1980s," then this film reached Biblical proportions months ago.)

Variety is reporting that not only are Stallone's fellow Oscar-winners Forest Whitaker and Sir Ben Kingsley considering joining the cast, but Oscar contender/Wrestler Mickey Rourke is as well! Rourke would play an arms dealer who works with the team, while Whitaker would play a CIA agent tracking them. (The latter is according to Ain't It Cool News' script review. They also say that Sandra Bullock is in the running for a role, but I'll believe that when I see it.) Please tell me that Ben Kingsley plays the Central American dictator -- it would totally make up for his role as the cross-eyed Guru Tugginmypudha in The Love Guru. He should be stripped of his knighthood for that.

As someone who holds regular Manly Movie screenings with his friends (either Stallone, Lundgren or Statham is guaranteed to show up on screen in a given night), this movie sounds like a dream come true. The only actors missing are Wesley Snipes and Jean-Claude Van Damme, but I'm holding out hope. After all, they still have yet to cast the black Expendable and the gay Expendable. (Yes, there is a gay Expendable. I know Van Damme isn't gay, but it's the only part left.)
