I still don't understand why Slumdog Millionaire is such a favourite. It's okay, but not best anything material.

I really, really hope Slumdog Millionaire takes the Oscars by storm. not only is it refreshing as hell to see a picture in the top five that isn't entirely in English and from a western perspective, it is a hell of a good flick to boot - blending what is essentially a fairy tale with an exposition of the contradictions of capitalism in modern India. You're left feeling happy for the characters, but convinced it could never happen in real life. Go Slumdog!

Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight?
Pity votes are sad.

@Christopher Swanson; your ethnocentrism makes you look stupid

Christopher Swanson, whatever you think of the subject and story (and twenty years ago I might have agreed with you that Slumdog Millionaire was a bit lightweight for major awards -- but that was before Titanic and Crash) you've got to admit that the cast (which included nine actors playing three characters at three different ages) worked amazingly well together. Personally I also think the directing and editing was awards-quality as well, and the music deserves a mention just for being like nothing else out there (on American screens, at least).

I hear people tend to appreciate it's qualities more on a second viewing. The narrative is pretty complex and there's a lot being thrown at you the first time 'round.

@BTG - I think the fact that you inferred 'ethnocentrism' from Swanson's comment is more revealing of your stupidity

I couldn't agree with both of you more. Ledger's take on the Joker was incredibly overhyped, and seemed really one-note in comparison to Bale's job as Batman. Unfortunately, Ledger pulled the really brilliant PR move of dying, and now they're practically inventing new awards to give him posthumously.

Not that I'm insensitive.

Okay, so I have a question. Why was Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) only nominated for supporting actor, not lead? I know a big focus was on the kids, but he was the one telling the story. And of course there was no chance that he could win (thanks to Heath) so that was just stupid and unfair.

...Wasn't Slumdog Millionaire
an Indian version of Oliver Twist? Pretty to look at, though.
