NY Comic Con 2009: Supernatural Sweetie Tackles Friday the 13th's Jason

Okay, maybe "tackles" is a slight exaggeration. Here was the situation: In a massive auditorium at the Jacob Javits Center, a really idiotic woman got up to ask a question. While everyone else had somewhat interesting queries for Jared Padalecki (presumably the hero), Derek Mears (Jason) and producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, one woman was clearly there only because of the dreaminess that is Padalecki (and no... it wasn't me. I swear). She stood in front of a crowd of fans who had just enthusiastically cheered for the very brutal and somewhat impressively disgusting first five minutes of Friday the 13th that were screened and admitted she wasn't a horror fan. This caused Mears to faux-storm off the panel and Padalecki to chase after him, physically stop him from running off and calm him down. It was much more hysterical than it sounds.

After everyone got resettled, the woman continued with her question, which was, would Padalecki stop making horror soon and do a romantic comedy? Again, this question did not go over well with the fans (who were there for not only Friday, but also the intense Watchmen and violent Terminator). And it is COMIC CON. Not ROM-COM CON. Padalecki joked, "This is a romantic comedy. After Jason comes out from the tree [at the end of the opening sequence], we all have a laugh and there's some roses." Love him. He continued, "It's not like I keep on going towards the genre, necessarily. I know I seem like a genre guy because I've done, like, 80 episodes of Supernatural, but when this movie came across the table, I just really wanted to be a part of it. I'm a big fan of what [Fuller and Form] have been doing with their prior movies. So I was like, "Count me in. I really want to be a part of this." But yeah, I'll keep my eye out for a romantic comedy. Maybe Saturday the 14th." Aw, that prankster.

Someone also asked Padalecki if there was any good old friendly competition between him and his Supernatural co-star Jensen Ackles, since he just did My Bloody Valentine 3-D. His answer: "We don't talk a lot." Clearly joking, he went on, "There's a lot of underhanded comments, like, 'What are you guys doing Friday?'" In all seriousness, though, he says that Ackles and he don't have a box-office battle going on. "He's a friend on and off screen. He's a big supporter [of mine], and I supported him. We saw his movie together. I thought it was great. This is a different movie, and they aren't head-to-head. I'm happy for his success and I'm sure he's happy for mine. It was fun doing a movie like this. I think [our movie is] gonna kick ass, though."

One commenter asked Padalecki if he got tired playing the male version of a damsel (which Mears proclaims to be a "sexy beast") and asked if he'd consider playing the bad guy. "I'd actually love to play the damsel," he teases. "I'd love to play the villain, because there's so much more. I'm an actor, that's what I do, but it is intense. The physicality of it. I get to cheat with my face and my dialogue and with editing. What [Derek] did was awesome. It was really excellent. I feel like if I was playing Jason, it would be like [insert caveman grunt]. Just the sort of coiled power you feel from his character, I realized I'd want to get some training before I'd play a villain."

And lastly the fanatics wanted to know how Padalecki reacted the first time he saw Mears all decked out in the Jason wardrobe, which appears to be quite intense. His answer: "I had to wrap up Season 3 of Supernatural until the end of April, and they started shooting this in mid-April. So I basically filmed in Vancouver on April 28th and then in Austin, TX on April 29th. It was wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am. When I showed up, we were doing shots in the woods, and it was in the woods and smoky and shots of light coming down to the ground. And then here's Jason in all his massive glory in the middle of the woods. I'm like, 'I'm filming a movie, right? This is not real, right?' But I got to see him in all his masked glory with the machete." Sounds like good times.

What do you think? Will you go see Padalecki in a horror film, or are you holding out for the romantic comedy?
