Push: Best Heroes Episode Ever?
We've been watching the commercials and trailers for the movie Push for a while now, and we're pretty psyched to see it in theaters. In fact, we're more psyched to see the psychic shenanigans of Push than we are to see every single remaining episode of Heroes Volume 4, a.k.a. "Fugitives." After the disappointment of "Generations" and the further disappointment of "Villains," we'd prefer to see super-powers in the hands of people who will actually do interesting things with them, and not just act stupid, visit the future and let themselves get tricked all the time. Here are our reasons Push is the best Heroes episode ever, and why Friday night is our new Monday night.
1. Chris Evans actually has superhero experience.
The main character in Push, Nick Gant, is a telekinetic mover, and he knows what he's doing with his powers. He can make dice fall where he wants, cock guns by remote and even make his punches stronger. The actor who plays him knows what he's doing, as well -- after all, Evans was the Human Torch in both Fantastic Four movies, so he's got this hero thing down pat. As opposed to Heroes' relatively inexperienced Hiro, who keeps getting things stolen from him, or Peter, who keeps leaving his girlfriends in alternate realities.
2. Eyes turning black means something cool is going to happen.
In Push, Djimon Hounsou plays Agent Carver, a "pusher" from Division who can control people's thoughts and actions. He wants to recapture a runaway pusher (played by Camilla Belle), and whenever either one of them uses their powers, their eyes go black, and people have to do what they say. On Heroes, Maya's black eyes only signify that she's about to make everyone around her die, and not just from her acting. Also, ever since Eden McCain killed herself, the only pusher we've had on the show has been Matt Parkman, and we'd rather get pushed by Camilla Belle than Greg Grunberg any day of the week.
3. Fight scenes!
Despite the fact that Heroes is about people with super powers, they don't really get into that many fights. Characters are either grossly outmatched and capitulate quickly, or we only see the aftermath of a bloody battle -- even big, climactic, fight scenes involve more posturing and grimacing than trading blows. Push is a movie about people who use their brains for combat, and they still smack the hell out of each other, as you can see in this clip. Psychic fist fight!
4. The superheroes are on the run.
...Okay, so Heroes is currently setting up a storyline that will have all of their superhumans going underground to avoid the feds, but this is after two and a half years of powered-types wandering past oblivious FBI guys and easily avoiding getting picked up by the non-government-affiliated Company. (Hell, one of them even managed to get himself elected president.) In Push, all known superhumans are the property of the government, and only one has ever escaped. Makes things a lot more exciting, huh? Way to play catch-up, Heroes!
5. Dakota Fanning can kick Claire-bear's ass.
Heroes' Claire Bennett may be impossible to kill, but she's a cheerleader, raised in the suburbs by a father who didn't want her to be a part of his violent world. Dakota Fanning was in Hounddog, and her character in Push can see the future. "Save the cheerleader"? Not from the wrath of Dakota Fanning, you won't.
Push vs. Heroes -- what say you?

Heroes all the way. Push seems a bit too angst-ridden for me.
I'm very interested in this 'Push'! Heroes has let me down :-(
Anything with Dakota Fanning in it gets the automatic "thumbs down" over here.
I'll take Push over Heroes these days.
Push seems to have oomph. Heroes has been terribly disappointing.
Push, but the latest Heroes ep has me hopeful.
Hey, if LOST can turn it around.......
I may be in a minority here. But I feel that Heroes has been great this year. It has really gone back to the essence of the first season with a lot of twists and turns. Every episode has carried and propelled the story. Sorry but I don't think two hours of the Human Torch pushing things holds any merit to even 10 minutes of Sylar
Heroes has been a giant letdown these past two seasons. Push wins by default.
I'd rather go blind than see Push or Heroes, so I say that they can both suck it.
Agreed. Dakota Fanning is an old woman trapped in a toddler's body.
Push all the way. From a purely superficial standpoint, Chris Evans is way hotter than anyone on Heroes.
Actually, so is Djimon Hounsou.
Uh....what was the point of this article? You're judging a show against the trailer of the movie? What the fuck?
I...can't help but notice you linked to the picture of the button that leads to the trailer, instead of the trailer itself.
I'm gonna watch Star Trek instead.
Push looks very exciting indeed, and I soooooo wanna see it, but comparing an action movie that clearly has a huge budget to a TV show that was crippled by the (very justified!) Writer's Strike simply isn't fair.
V3 of Heroes was ... ok, most of it was awful. Godawful. I have hope for V4. They're on the run. Sylar's gonna meet his REAL father. Claire's not standing for any crap from her messed-up family anymore.
Now if we could just get that stupid wig off of her head ...
I'm psyched to see Push. It looks like it has a great story and great action sequences.
I'm also psyched to see Fugitives. The first episode in the volume seemed to it off in spectacular manner, and I certainly hope the rest will follow suit. Villains was too full of changing sides and being duped. At last, they'll all be working together. It will be refreshing. I don't think that's "catch-up" at all. Marvel just did it with Civil War to great success.
I just saw Push, and I have to say, I almost think it would work better as a tv series than a movie. Still, until Heroes has anything as cool as people who can cause fish to explode by screaming, Push wins in my book.
I saw Push over the weekend and really liked it. fairly liner storyline, but a few nice turns an twists, but yeah, it felt like it could have been a Heroes 2 part episode rather than a stand alone movie. Of course if Heroes got their hands on it, it probably would have become a long, drawn out, watered down verision of what was a pretty decent Hollywood action flick.
i like heros and all but like you said it will be nice to see people with powers actually use them against other people with powers
Totally totally agree! Gotta love Sylar (I know he's the bad guy, but come on he really is the one that holds the viewers attention!)
To be fair I've been loving Heroes lately. It's not quite as gripping or as visually intense as the first series and powers aren't used as much as they are in Push, but it's awesome. I'm hoping for powers to be used more later on.
Push has a good story that's poorly executed, but the visuals and the action sequences were stunning in my opinon. I dunno, I guess I just have a weakness for psychic powers, they're so awesome.
So precious post. :) thanks
