Reasons The Neverending Story Remake Is a Bad Idea

Here's the thing about the film The Neverending Story -- the effects are completely terrible by today's standards. The scenes of Atreyu riding on Falkor are so blue-screened it is ridiculous. However, this remains one of my favorite fantasy films. The puppets and the characters are believable (despite the low-budget nature), and it's just such a sweet story. It holds a special place in my heart, and after watching it in my adulthood, it actually holds up as a touching tale. Nice job, Wolfgang Petersen! (It makes me want to erase that whole Poseidon debacle from my mind.) While the film only covers half of the ground from Michael Ende's novel, it's to be expected when trying to condense this big story into a two-hour plot. However, there's someone out there who thinks they can remake this classic film, while incorporating more of the novel. Good luck.

While they could end up with something like the successful Charlie and the Chocolate Factory reboot (though I personally still like the original better, with non-digital Ooompa Loompas), they could also end up with something that looks as rotten as the new Race to Witch Mountain. And while it's been a while since I read The Neverending Story, I don't really see a big role Johnny Depp could play in this one, so they're going to have to work extra-hard to find a way to appeal to fans. But my real concern lies in the sheer amount of bad fantasy that has come out in theaters since Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings started raking in some cash. Here are some of the reasons we're nervous, based on our recent experiences.

The Arthur and the Minimoys/Arthur and the Invisibles Factor: Will they change the title from the book, to make it something more catchy for kids? Is "Neverending" not going to resonate with our ADHD environment? Will "Story" sound too bookish in this digital age? Would it become, like, "Bastian Meets the Badass Dragon" or "Arthur Stops At Nothing" (because you know that Atreyu is never going to fly) or just get straight to the point and say, "We've Got Princesses AND Dragons"?

The Bridge to Terabithia Factor: Will it take a captivating story about the power of imagination and then fill it with too much CGI? One of the best things about The Neverending Story is the Nothing. I fear for how they try to anthropomorphize that to give it a cute little face.

The Golden Compass Factor: Will a smart, layered and uniquely told tale get dumbed down to the lowest common denominator and basically ruined by too much Botox? Will they get Nicole Kidman to play The Empress? Her frozen face might actually work in this case. Hmm...

The TMNT Factor: This one is a stretch as far as fantasy goes, but seriously -- this remake took a cute cartoon about crime-fighting and turned it into a dark twisted version. We fear that Atreyu will become all buff, and the Empress is going to have to wear spandex. Or worse, they could take the title and try and abbreviated it. Coming to theaters in 2010: NES!

The Eragon Factor: We've seen the future of dragons. And its not looking pretty for our favorite little luckdragon.

The Chronicles of Narnia Factor: In general, this reboot could do worse than ending up like Narnia, but the great thing about the original Neverending Story is that the movie actually not neverending. It's just about an hour and a half, while the Narnia films clock in at nearly two and half hours. I'm hoping that by taking on more of the book, we don't get a big, old, bloated film in return.

And just how much do you bet they try and see if Daniel Radcliffe will play Atreyu?

Thoughts on this remake? Leave 'em below.

or "The Dark is Rising" factor - a potent combination of all of the above, where they take an insanely amazing set of Newberry award winning books from the 70's building on Arthurian Legend, combine them with crappy casting, awful writing, and the complete dumbing-down and re-configuration of the story and thenrename it something retarded like "The Seeker".

The part that still makes me cry to this day is when the rock man is talking about how he couldn't save his friends. "They look like such big, strong hands, don't they?" Heartwrenching. I don't think any amount of remaking will capture that again.

They'll add a villain so that the movie can end with a boss fight.

Remaking this movie is almost as bad an idea as E.T. 2.

This was one of my two all-time favorite movies when I was a kid. I still have a worn-out VHS copy that I refuse to part with. I am horrified at what might become of this (but there is a tiny part of me that will hold out hope that it could actually be good).

As others have mentioned, I wouldn't be surprised if the filmmakers wanted more of a villian. I foresee an expanded focus on Gmork (in full CGI glory).

And the book is fantastic.

i agree with you except about the tmnt factor. the original comics the turles started out in were a dark and twisted parody of violent 80's comics and then they turned it into a cute little crime fighting cartoon all the remake did was try to take it back to to the orginal vision

Why can't they just rerelease and remaster the old one so that it looks better for our CGI-jaded youngsters (I'm 25, btw: this movie kicked A$$) instead of throwing money into a horrible remake? Unless the original movie left out a whole ton out of the book leave it alone. Stop tainting my childhood memories!

I agree with dougie - that's actually what I came to say. I was a TMNT fan when I was little and a friend told me what was going on in the comics nowadays and it was like "..seriously? I -- ...wot? Wot? ......wot." It's insane.

And it's nice to hear I wasn't the only one who loved the 'Charlie' reboot. (I liked it more than the original.)

Agh! Why do people keep remaking perfectly good movies? If it ain't broke, don't fix it, please! The special effects are looking pretty dated, yeah, but even if they put in state-of-the-art CGI this movie will fail unless they can capture the original spirit of the film, which I highly doubt.

I had forgotten about the horse dying... that was awful. And now I'm just praying that they never, EVER remake The Princess Bride. Please keep some of my childhood sacred, movie remaking people!

While the movie wasn't everything the book was (fantastica, anyone?), it's certainly better than anything they'll be able to chunk together now. The CGI'd Gmork will end up awful, and who knows how they'll represent The Nothing.
It's actually a lot like Star Wars, in how the plot moves, and we all know what they've done to those classics recently.

I saw this movie in the theaters when it came out (I was 5), and it was and still is one of my all-time favorite movies. Certain stories connect with you on a deeper level for whatever reason, and this is one that has always connected with me.
The one lesson I think always made the most impression on me? The importance of fighting for your dreams and not giving up even when other people try to talk you down or stop you.
The idea that a movie has no more value as a story just because the technology has improved? Better go burn all my black and white movies, silent films, and anything made without CGI.
{sigh} This just makes me sad.

It could go either way. But I don't think there can be a middle ground.

I LOVE the movie myself. I love it so much I don't even notice the special effects.

With the right director, right actors, crew, etc., it could be absolutely stellar. However, if they make a mistake in ANY of those, then it will be a truly epic fail.

Anyone who tries to remake will need to have big brass ones to do it. And God help him if he screws up.

I liked the original movie ok, but it's nothing compared to the book. I absolutely love the book, and remember being annoyed as a kid that Ateyu wasn't green and Bastian wasn't fat in the movie. So I would be cautiously in favor of a remake, as long as they don't screw it up even more.

They did enough damage with the two god-awful sequels. I'm still trying to pretend those never happened, let's not remake the original so I have to figure out how to block that from my mind too.

If they remake this and ruin it (almost inevitable if they even try, I think) I can see an army of 20-and 30-somethings demanding someone's head.

I want a remake, because let's face it, the original movie wasn't very good. Yeah, there are some good scenes, but as a whole it just falls flat, especially compared to the novel. It's such a great story, that deserves to be adapted into a truly great movie (or two, why not?), that's faithful to the source material.

I'm pretty sure a lot of the people who are against a remake haven't even read the book. Do yourself a favor, read it! It stomps all over the first movie and no one who read it can't tell me that he or she wouldn't like to see a movie that tells Bastian's complete journey, the most interesting part (I won't spoil it ;) ) wasn't even part of the movie.

Yes, the movies we see when we're 5 years old always remain The Greatest Movie Ever. I have no wish to wreck a treasured childhood memory for anyone.

But I'm with those for whom the movie is a disappointing mess for anyone who read the book. (And, like The Princess Bride, this story is in part about honoring the magic of books, right?) It does indeed lop off the last half of the book, which is the half that makes it extraordinary and not just another fairy tale. And although in the book the Empress's new name is indeed Moonchild, in the movie they chose to have him screech something unintelligible. Way to blow a climactic suspenseful moment, guys.

So: I do think that there absolutely is a legitimate reason to make a new movie of this story, if it were done right. Whether that will actually happen is, of course, another matter. I have trouble thinking of a movie "remake" of a good book that was superior to the first filming, even when there was plenty of room for imrovement.

Actually, Bastian's new name for the Empress' in the German original novel is indeed "Mondenkind".

If they really want to go back to The Neverending Story, why not instead digitally remaster some effects in the old movie, like the blue screening, and then make a new sequel that covers the second half of the book, instead of those two travesties they called sequels.

Studios should get it into their heads than not everything is better with more CGI. And even today good CGI takes a lot of money; otherwise you end up with crappy CGI that looks way worse than puppets or animatronics, because puppets at least *are* real. The Dark Crystal for example is still a great and enchanting movie. Yoda from the old Star Wars trilogy doesn't need to be "prettied up", either.

If they want to remake a movie based on one of Michael Ende's boks, why not remake Momo" instead?

I should probably find some sort of "unpopular opinions" thread for this, but ...

I was a huge fan of the book when I was a kid (lived in Germany and have read it in the original German several times and in English once) and have always felt the first film, while entertaining, was barely a tease of what it could be.

The film covered roughly 1/3 of the original book. The story continues with the progressive corruption (and eventual redemption) of Bastian that includes a pretty epic standoff with Atreyu. It's an awesome story that made me really think about how power corrupts and probably still informs my morality today. It contains messages the world could use these days. The original film is too clean, too black-and-white, and contains none of the things that set the book apart as truly great reading for kids.

In short, I think setting the book to a new, more complete film is a pretty good idea. What they have to do is distance themselves from the original film (and perhaps honor it with some easter eggs in the new version) and just reimagine the whole thing. A "remake" of the film would not be an improvement.

Came to agree with the other TMNT fans... the original comics, the first live-action movie, and the 2003 cartoon were all much darker than the cartoon from 80's and early 90's. It's a story of vengeance and alienation, not a "cute cartoon about crime fighting." Research, do some.

the fact that there is ANY cgi in the movie at all is too much. You ask is the writer have seen the movie- have you read the book? There was no need for any special effects. there was no need to illustrate their pretend world. it's freaking *imagination* for chrissakes- isn't that the point? to *imagine* it?

yes, the new name was moonchild--it's kind of hard to understand him when he shouts, but that's what it is in the book. it's also kind of entertaining because in the movie, didn't he say he'd give her his mom's name? moonchild, heh.

anyway, i'm one of those who has both read the book and seen the movie and i love both dearly. in fact, i recently received the movie on DVD from a friend and watched it just the other night, and everything i loved about it in the beginning still holds my love now.

while i think it would be interesting to see a movie made that follows the book more closely, i just have a really hard time having faith enough in hollywood not to crap all over it. i actually liked the remake of charlie & the chocolate factory because it was kind of a completely different animal from the original, and i could see that being the case here. i think it all depends on who is tied to the project. burton's a genius, after all, and maybe if he were to do a neverending story reboot, we wouldn't all be panicking. i guess i'm going to take a "wait-and-see" stance, but my loyalty is sworn to the original.

also, hollywood should leave clue alone. best movie EVAR. :)

They should DEFINITELY make a sequel because the second half of the book is even better than the first. But instead of remaking the first half of the book they should just rerelease the old one a few months before the new one (sequel) comes out. A single line about how everything is a little different in the fantasy world (especially after The Nothing)could gloss over the change in actors.
