Wow, Fox Hates Their Paying Customers Almost as Much as the Music Industry Hates Theirs Beginning March 31, 20th Century Fox will be stripping every special feature from all of their rental DVDs in one of the stupidest and most desperate attempts to boost retail sales I've ever seen. Although it seems like it will vary a bit from title to title, and that the Blu-ray rentals for most movies will contain some special features (details are still to come), this is still idiotic in so many ways, besides even the obvious ones.

1) It screws the few paying customers you have.
Much like when the record labels imposed DRM on iTunes downloads (which has now been reversed, but it sure was a bitch for all the years it was around) in an effort to fight piracy, piracy was not really fought. The few remaining people in the world who were still willing to pay for music were screwed over, while all of the people stealing it got to live their music-stealing lives DRM-inconvenience free. If people are willing to pay Blockbuster or Netflix money to rent a movie, they deserve to get the retail version, commentary, gag reels and all, because after all -- the people getting it from BitTorrent for free sure are. Don't piss off the friends you have left, media industries.

2) The casual viewer doesn't care about DVD commentary.
How, exactly, will this boost retail sales? Most of the people renting movies don't necessarily want to hear the intricacies of filmmaking from the director or screenwriter, and I highly doubt they're going to spring for the retail version just to watch a gag reel or deleted scene in most cases. So again, all this does is put out the passionate viewer with likely little upturn in sales, which just seems ass-backwards. And stupid. Above all, stupid.

3) It screws the retailer.
I know this isn't Fox's problem, but I think it's worth considering here. First of all, I've worked in a video store, and oh. My. God. Can you imagine having to explain this new policy to customers all day, every day, and all night, every night? Holy crap. The goodish news is that the First Sales Doctrine does allow for retailers to purchase retail DVDs and rent them out, but they've gotta eat the cost of those DVDs (at retail prices, no less), so it's certainly not going to happen for every Fox release. In Blockbuster's more bottom-line sensitive case, I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't happen for any of them. So this is going to cost Netflix, not to mention the nearly-extinct mom and pop video stores of the world, a ridiculous amount of money they shouldn't have to spend.

4) It's a buncha crap!
Besides all the legitimate reasons, it's just so unbelievably annoying! Gah! Somebody smack Fox!

Hopefully this will fail (it will), and other studios won't adopt similar policies. Oh, and the article I read didn't mention TV show DVDs, but I'd wager same goes for all releases, which is just the worst.

What do you guys think of all of this?
