I Want My DVD: Tuesday, May 5, 2009

If it's Tuesday, then your favorite Belgian art film is coming out on DVD today! Yes, Tuesdays at MWoP are now reserved for running down the big DVD releases, so you know what to check out when you swing by Best Buy on your way home. We'll also cover the big TV show releases, so the TWoP-types can get their fix, too. What we won't cover? Blu-Ray re-releases of movies that have been available for years. We'd be here all day. What we also won't cover? Belgian art films. Read on, fellow film-lovers!

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Aside from Wes Anderson movies, how many films go immediately to the Criterion Collection? According to my quick scan of their titles, not many, although I am perpetually amazed that not one, but two Michael Bay films meet the Criterion criteria. A Michael Bay-directed Benjamin Button is something to ponder, as it would likely have had more war scenes, more explosions, and Cate Blanchett would have been a lot tanner. Obviously, with all of the special effects and a century's worth of art direction, there's a lot to talk about in the special features; here's hoping X-Men Origins: Wolverine gets a Criterion edition as well.

Last Chance Harvey
"Last Chance Harvey" sounds like a 1970s cop movie, like Dirty Harry, about a detective on the edge. "Harvey, you're a menace to this department and to the entire city of Chicago! I'm giving you one more chance--" "Yeah, yeah, it's always my last chance. Now are you gonna assign me a new partner, or do I have to drag Johnson's corpse around with me?" Maybe in the sequel to this film, Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson will get drawn into a web of intrigue.

Wendy & Lucy
Maybe it's the dreary, British-sounding names, but you can already tell by the title that this movie just isn't going to be as much of a thrill ride as, say, Thelma & Louise. Or, say, Mad Dog & Glory.

Enchanted April
I'm sure there's a doozy of a story behind why this fairly well-known 1992 movie is only now making it to DVD for the first time, but I really, really don't care enough to try too hard to find out.

The Last Templar
Finally, the TV miniseries starring Mira Sorvino and Scott Foley is out on DVD! Now we can use that VHS tape to tape other, better TV miniseries!

Lipstick Jungle Season 2
This is one of a slew of canceled TV series whose final volumes are coming out today, including half-a-season wonder Crusoe: The Complete Series, Boston Legal Season 5 and October Road Season 2. (There was a Season 2?) And I don't know why I never watched Earth: Final Conflict, or why they released Seasons 3, 4 and 5 first, but Season 1 finally comes out today. In-the-know nerds everywhere are probably peeing their pants. (I'm a nerd who's not in-the-know, so I can say that.)
