Star Trek: 5-Year Mission Accomplished

Warning: This review contains spoilers.

I think I've figured out J.J. Abrams' recipe for a successful Star Trek reboot:

1 Kirk
2 Spocks
12 facial tattoos
1 Simon Pegg
1 McCoy impersonator
3 black holes
1 Cloverfield monster
1 green woman in her underwear

Stir vigorously for 126 minutes.

I oversimplify, of course. The delicately crafted piece of machinery that is Star Trek was clearly a labor of love by writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Abrams was never a Trek fan), and was created to yield maximum fan respect while at the same time offering the easiest jumping-on point for new audiences. And it did both admirably. By which I mean that most fans are grudgingly calling the movie a success while at the same time nit-picking it to death, and mass audiences did not have their brains catch fire while wrapping their heads around the time-travel timeline presented in the movie. At least, no brain fires were reported in the news. I have to admit, that as brilliant as it was to blaze a new path with a divergent timeline, I myself had trouble grasping how Romulan Biff Tannen found Vulcan Doc Brown, but no matter -- the movie was constantly moving, so I never had to dwell on it for long.

Seriously. The movie kind of doesn't stop, but in a good way. It's a 2-hour movie, and every minute of it is action-packed. Aside from maybe three scenes, someone is always running, shooting, getting tortured or making out with somebody. (Yes, that counts.) Kirk and Spock start their life stories with a Beastie Boys-scored car chase and the Vulcan version of a schoolyard brawl, respectively. (When the Beasties started playing, I could hear thousands of Trekkie minds cry out in agony, then be silenced by theater ushers.) When someone needs to get to another part of the ship, they always run flat-out. The extreme sky-diving seemed like pandering to me before I saw it, but it actually makes a hell of a lot of sense in the film, although the choice of people who do it seems arbitrary. (They need people who can do hand-to-hand combat? Why not people who can shoot Romulans dead with a gun, since Sulu was allowed to bring a sword? Well, at least we got to see Sulu's lone personality trait on the big screen.) And making the bad guy a tattooed miner/biker rather than a Shakespeare-quoting clone or a robot... well, that's just good storytelling. Who wants to see civilized people fight other civilized people? It's called contrast, people.

In my article on Galaxy Quest, I pointed out that comedy is a key part of Star Trek's history, and this movie does not disappoint in that regard. The casting of Simon Pegg as Scotty is a brilliant and hilarious reinvention, and Karl Urban's dead-on McCoy fills me with glee that I last felt watching DeForest Kelley in Star Trek III. Kirk's cocky apple-eating while successfully sabotaging the Kobayashi Maru scenario left me a-tingle, although that may have just been finally seeing the legendary Trek story told on the screen. Hell, I didn't even mind Kirk's numb tongue and swollen hands when McCoy dosed him to get him on the ship, although it was the most slapsticky thing I'd seen in a long time. Mostly because I tend to avoid slapstick.

But the blend of action and comedy works -- in fact, it finally elevates Star Trek to a level of general interest that actually warrants the massive film budgets required, rather than morality plays of its origins, done on flimsy TV soundstages. And together, they keep the movie from getting bogged down in tragedies like the death of Kirk's father and the virtual extermination of the Vulcan race. True, these are big changes from the original series, but to me, they only enhance what we like about the main characters. Kirk's fearless nature and strong sense of responsibility are only enhanced by his father's sacrifice, and Spock is more mysterious and more of an outsider than ever, as are all Vulcans. Even Spock's romance with Uhura finally addresses the rarely acknowledged sexuality of the character and puts him on near-equal footing, fooling-around-wise, with Kirk. Everything about the franchise has been sharpened, and the fat has been cut away.

I do, however, have one nit-pick, and it's not due to any sort of old-series-vs.-new-movie continuity error. If anyone is working up their own breakdown of why the movie's timeline doesn't make any sense, just stop -- after the first five minutes of Abrams' film, all bets are off. The Enterprise launching later, Romulans getting discovered sooner, the uniforms being the wrong color... after the Kelvin is destroyed by time travelers, everything changes, like a butterfly flapping his wings, or maybe a flying Cuisinart destroying said wings with well-placed photon torpedoes. No, my nitpick comes within the continuity of the movie itself, and involves the ending, so SPOILER ALERT:

As if the finale wasn't exciting enough -- with a well-timed attack on Nero's mining ship causing it to get sucked into a black hole -- Abrams felt the need to have one last challenge for the Enterprise to pull off. While asking Nero if he wants any assistance, Sulu parks the ship a short distance away, as Kirk and Spock smugly watch Nero die. It's only when the warnings start flashing that they realize they need to get the hell out of the black hole's range... even though getting far, far away was everybody's primary concern when the black hole swallowed Vulcan. I know you all just went through some stuff, but I've seen enough science fiction to know that, when a black hole forms, you get the Hell out of Dodge. But by the time it happens in the film, it's too late -- I'm already excited to see another installment.

Or, as Leonard Nimoy would say, "If you don't like this movie, you're a dickhead." I'm paraphrasing, but you can see it below.

What did you think of the film? Are you a dickhead? Be dickish below.

I LOVED this movie. It was amazing and a perfect summer film. The first time you see the Enterprise in space, it took my breath away.

I loved the classic sound effects, the little music notes, the acting, everything.

It just seriously needed more Scotty. Be still, my Simon Pegg loving heart.

When's the sequel come out now?

I'm a Star Trek nerdlite (as in I love and rewatch them all but I don't have ship blueprints or debate nitpicks on the internet) and I loved it.

I was both amused and appalled that Abrams found a way to work in Clifford the Big Red Ball from Alias since it was so disappointing the first time around. This time I could live with it. Though if a single drop makes such a huge blackhole why did Spock haul around enough to make the whole galaxy disappear?

If you're going to nit-pick, what about the fact that there's no plausible reason why the black hole would have to be created at the center of a freaking planet! Not that I didn't love the drill action sequence or the visual of Vulcan imploding, but it bugged me so much.

I'm a TOS fan from watching the very first episode aired WHEN IT AIRED. Kirk was my first screen crush during puberty. I practically worship TNG.

That said, this movie was the most perfect Star Trek movie ever made and superior to 99% of anything Star Trek ever seen on the small screen.

It is true to what this drooling fangirl always loved about Star Trek. It gave Spock that little bit of love that would have had me drooling over him instead of Kirk way back when.

The actors deserve enormous props for being spot-on with the characters without obvious impersonations. Except the Karl Urban must be lip synching Deforest Kelley, it is so perfect.

I miss the originals, but the rebooted versions - sigh, I can hardly wait for more.

We Trekkers and trekkies are too laden with The Canon. It was way past time for a reboot. Take your OCD drugs, fanboys, and step on board this new ride in the Trek Universe.

Sorry to ruin the love fest, but I wasn't a fan. If they weren't going to follow Trek history, then why use the original crew? I'm not talking about minor things (Orion slave girls in Starfleet, meeting the Romulans early) which I could live with but THEY BLEW UP VULCAN! Now any changes in continuity can be put down to that (and/or the destruction of Kirk's dad's ship) but then - why call them the original crew? Why not make it the Enterprise-G and have it Captained by Kirk's great-great-great-grandson (which there have to be about 5000 of, given his wildcat ways) and have him crew a ship along with the offspring of the original crew (which would be completely unbelievable, but bearable)?

Yes it was all pretty and exciting. And maybe I should get over it. But that's just my $0.02.

I took it as an alternate reality, of which all the treks seem to waltz in and out of with ease. The fact that Nimoy was called Spock Prime in the credits can imply he is from our "canon" universe. The black hole not only cause him to travel back in time but to travel back in time to an alternate universe. And in this alternate universe...many things happened quite differently. Yeah it's the "original" crew but viewed in an alternate universe. Kudos to the reboot. Can't wait to see it in IMAX.

I feel your pain, John, as I too was gobsmacked at Vulcan's destruction. However, looking at it in a fresh perspective, it's a very clever and extremely entertaining new venture they've just created: providing the performances remain as solid and as honest as they are in this film, I am happily on board. Cheers!

Absolutely adored the movie. I'm willing to overlook the minor flaws, but that's mainly because I'm more of TNG fan. Probably also because this might have been the most attractive cast ever. Also? I think Seth Meyers might be a Trekkie based on his huge grin and blatant enthusiasm.

What blew my mind was that it negates the entire TOS series. Not just a few things, but so many that it really changes the entire canon universe.

As someone said, this is an alternate universe.

Does Spock's wife still exist? Will Tuvak ever exist? Will the Enterprise still have to host that convention of ambassadors, and, if so, will the absence of Spock's mother change the outcome?

I'm not unhappy, because I like this new, younger crew and I'll probably enjoy the next however many films they make. But--dang! Way to comp;etely wipe out a forty-year storyline!

It was hard to understand what this movie was going to be about since they billed it as a "prequel." So many of my trekkie brothers and sisters really got hung up on that and I think that as long as they don't boycott the movie they will see what this movie can do for Star Trek.

Giving it a whole new premise means that EVERYTHING can be done again but this time with a true bad ass kirk and with a spock who has emotions with an obvious new dark side. This will be exciting to see but I just hope that they can keep the talent up and the energy high so that we get to enjoy all of the glory that is TOS in the 21st century.

I absolutely loved the movie, and as escapism, it's probably the best thing we'll be treated to in a theatre this year.

I still need to wrap my mind around the fundamental changes in canon, though. Without Vulcan, multiple key moments (and thousands of small ones) in Trek canon aren't possible.

I was so over-the-top loving the first half of the movie, seeing how the Kobayashi Maru cheat went down, and how all the characters met, filling in all those little holes, but then at the end, I realized that none of those little gems were actually "prequel" to the original series, because they happened in an alternate timeline.

Also: will JJ address Spock's Pon Farr in a sequel? McCoy said in TOS that they had to get him back to Vulcan or he'd die. Does some hanky-panky with Uhura take that need away?

Most disturbing of all: the only Trek series whose canon has not been remotely altered is ... Enterprise.

To Coalhouse,

I wouldn't worry about Enterprise, as even that show's canon would have changed with the new movie. There were a few things from the future that made Enterprise, like the Xindi attack inspired from the future, and the Borg from First Contact. In this alternate timeline those events might not even have happened. (I'm embarrassed that I even decided to venture down this thought-path...)

Loved the film and believed that the reboot was warranted and necessary. One quibble though- as enjoyable as ogling Zoe Saldana may be, the retro-costuming was a bad call and a severely false note: her mini-skirt would be an inappropriate uniform in *this* century, let alone the next. The semi-gratuitous underwear scene should have been plenty to dispose of any fanboy desire for T&A. In the (probably inevitable) event of a sequel, let's go back to gender neutral uniforms, hmm?

I'm with Rook: why can't we have a perfectly good movie (which this is) without some gratuitous anti-feministic-lusty-steam-scene to slow down the action? And yes, I'm only counting the running parts, Zach.

I think Abrams made a very entertaining sci fi adventure movie, but it has nothing whatsoever to with Star Trek. To call it a reboot or an alternate reality is just a way of saying it's a space adventure that's exploiting the Star Trek name to attract customers. Not only is the narrative different (all action and special effects, minimal character development), but the classic Star Trek themes have been dumped--not even a mention of the prime directive. Roddenberry's heirs sold out big time, and he must be flipping in his grave. I dread to think what paths the inevitable sequels will take.

The overwhelmingly positive reactions kind of boggle me. I thought it was a complete trainwreck of bad plotting, terrible dialogue and a non-stop barrage of forced comedy. The comedy style was reminiscent of Kurtzman'z and Orci's other blockbuster trainwreck, Transformers. Just awful.

That said, the performances were great and there were some good character moments. They were just few and far between, being squeezed among some contrived set pieces.

I think it was a brilliant (and shocking...I was saying "THEY DESTROYED VULCAN!" for about 3 hours after seeing it) way to bring some suspense into an OST movie. Think about it, if you know how everything will turn out, what is the point of even really seeing it? It would be a little like reading a Star Trek book, a fun visit with our old friends, but you know that nothing will ever REALLY change in the big picture. Now, we have a whole new world to play in. This of it as the "Mirror"-verse, but without the beards!

For everyone saying that this altered the canon of the original show; No, it did not.

Everything that happened in TOS still happened and every character exists exactly as they were in TOS, only they exist in an alternate reality. The alternate reality in this movie (created when Nero went back in time and attacked the Kelvin) is running PARALLEL to the original universe it is NOT REPLACING IT. The original canon is still intact. This is spelled out very clearly in the movie, so I don't understand the confusion. Vulcan was destroyed in this universe, not in the original. Kirk never knew his father in this universe, but he still knew him in the original (FutureSpock talks about him). So if the events of this movie bothered you, then just ignore it because the original universe is still intact just as it was regardless of what happens in this movie.

I personally, LOVED this movie. So much so that I went back to see it a second time. The entire cast was amazing and Abrams did it without any big "stars".

My favorite scene is Kirk's bad reaction to the vaccine with McCoy chasing him through the Enterprise with a hypo. "Stop it!" I just laugh my head off when I see that. That and, "Numb tongue?!" Scotty was pretty funny, too. :)

So - Spoiler alert, details up ahead - i just saw the movie, enjoyed it, but i left with a huge plot hole question buzzing in my brain. When Nero and his ship were sucked back in time by the singularity and spit out a great deal before Spock, why didn't they just go warn everyone on romulus about the impending star collapse, get them all to relocate or something, and save them all? Then there's no need for any of this revenge business, especially if the planet they are trying to save is "still out there". Or am i wrong, did i miss an important detail? (the movie projector had issues during Nemoy-spock and Kirk's ice-planet conversation, so we missed approximately 2 minutes of the movie.) Because if Nero was indeed motivated by grief, he would have also had the opportunity to prevent it all from happening in the first place, wouldn't he?

Also, for the record, as soon as we saw that "Ensign Ricky" or whatever his name is was parachuting to the drill with Sulu and Kirk was wearing a red uniform, i was laughing my ass off in the theater. I thought it was an awesome touch.

As a 12-year-old, I watched Star Trek TOS hiding in the kitchen looking over my parents' heads. (It was on at 9:00, my bedtime.) As a long-time fan of ALL the series, I am very pleased at the outcome. I was afraid that Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci were going to glossit up so much I wouldn't recognize it. Fortunately, my fears were unrealized.

This isn't technically the same crew. Since the time traveling messed up the normal sequence of time (a la the butterfly's wings) they created, as Uhura says, an alternate reality. This crew isn't going to do all the same things the originals did because their destinies have been altered (paraphrased from Spock).

So, in the movie itself, they explain (maybe a little too conveniently, but still adequately) why such differences can occur and why this new Star Trek won't catch up to the old. That is why they can use the same characters and don't have to use great-great-grandkids. They are the same people in very different circumstances, all because someone decided to mess with the space-time continuum.

PS- Usually, I think time travel is a totally lame plot device and, though I wasn't thrilled about it here, I think they made it work...and I am glad they did! Seeing Spock and Spock Prime together and having Nimoy pass the torch brought me to tears. Long live and prosper!

I concur! I had the same question in my mind. The only thing that I can think is that Nero is supposed to have gone insane with grief and therefore can't think straight. I personally despised Eric Bana's portrayal (but, what's new?) so I had a hard time figuring the character out at all.

I agree that the Red Suit Guy was awesome! One of my favorite moments and, by the reaction of the audience members, you could tell who was a real fan because we were all dying!

This was a remake of The Wrath of Khan.
Opens at Star Fleet Academy
Kobiyashi Maru stuff
Enterprise launches with a bunch of Cadets
Unshakeable enemy, hell-bent on revenge by inflicting pain on the hero, and possessed of serious weapons and mean crew: Khan, Kirk; Nero, Spock
Use of nasty-ass worm on high ranking officer to elicit info: Khan, Paul Winfield; Nero, Pike
Stranding good guy on planet: Kirk on Regula, Spock on wherever
Good guy rejoins the ship: Kirk, and old Spock's proxy, young Kirk
Chasing the bad guy at high speed
Bad guy has/seeks planet killing weapon
Before bad guy gets killed, good guy made to suffer: Kirk, death of Spock; Spock, death of Vulcan
Remaking the future - Life without Spock (until ST3): life without Vulcan

PS-

Seeing the original crew in this movie, even if played by other actors, made me realize just how truly inferior all the other spinoffs were. It’s like when you've been to Disneyland, and then you go to Kings Island or Six Flags or whatever. It might be fun, and you can kid yourself that it’s entertaining and great, but Mickey and Minnie live in Anaheim. Period. At the end of the day, never mind Jean-Luc, Worf and Data - what we've all truly wanted all along, since 1969, is more Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. And now we've got it. And it works.

Another truth I found in the good book, even though I dont actually practice organized religion at this point, was when Jesus said Eat, drink, and do ALL things in moderation. Extremism of ANY type can ONLY lead to negative outcomes for all. Even religion in extreme has proven historically to kill masses of innocents. When I read the 84 comments, except for Erics more practical and positive approach, I saw primarily extremism.

No doubt it was Ben Johnson, Timber; or, Discoveries Made Upon Men and Matter who proclaimed the phrase Talking and eloquence are not the same thing: to speak, and to speak well, are two things. A fool may talk, but a wise man speaks.

I have been browsing on-line greater than 3 hours these days, yet I never found any attention-grabbing article like yours. It is pretty value enough for me. Personally, if all webmasters and bloggers made just right content as you did, the web shall be much more helpful than ever before. The secrets of automatic cash are rarely ever divulged. Sure, many claim to have the key, some even try to sell their secrets, but few offer the true deal for free. You should take a look at this while it really is still accessible... http://tinyurl.com/72mapkx

I would suggest that most of the time, it is best to travel down the beaten path. I often find that the path of least resistance is also the safest. If you are a gambler at heart, go ahead take your chances. At least get yourself some free gambling money before you get started - http://tinyurl.com/btaomca On the whole, life is a journey that should not be taken alone, but you must choose your traveling companions wisely.
