BLOGS
Wow. Today sees the release of some of the most anticipated TV on DVD in recent memory. Well, anticipated by me, anyway. So it's mostly cartoons, oiled-up body-builders, serial killer movies and sketch comedy. I know what you're thinking, and the answer is, "Yes, I am a psychopath."
G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero: Season 1.1
With the live-action G.I. Joe movie looming, demand for a new edition of the original cartoon on DVD is at an all-time high, both by people wanting to get re-acquainted with the team before they go see the movie and by those who are trying to forget the movie even exists. This set (available online this week, but hitting retail stores next week) contains the first three 5-episode mini-series, plus the first seven episodes of the regular season, not to mention the hilarious PSAs and the original Hasbro toy commercials. And if that's not enough episodes for you to start with, you can skip to the end and just order the entire series.
Leverage: The First Season
If you're not watching Leverage, you're missing out on a great show about con-artists and thieves bamboozling criminals in the name of justice. It's like Ocean's 11: The Series, unless that sounds terrible to you, in which case it's nothing like that at all. Season Two starts tomorrow, coincidentally.
Mad Men: Season Two
From what I understand, this is a very good show. I don't watch it, myself. I tried to, but it's just not my cup of tea. Let the mocking commence.
American Gladiators: The Original Series: The Battle Begins
I haven't watched the original Gladiators in years, but the revamp last year brought back fond memories, so I look forward to putting this in, sitting back and feeling lazy and inadequate.
Grey Gardens
Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange as Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy's crazy, reclusive cousin and aunt? Even if you weren't a fan of the original documentary, how could you stay away from this HBO original movie?
The State: The Complete Series
People have been waiting for this to come out for so long that many of the show's fans have grown old and died. But now you can get all three seasons (24 episodes) plus over 90 minutes of deleted sketches and commentary. Then, after you watch it, you can finally release your grip on this mortal coil and join your friends in the afterlife.
The Haunting in Connecticut (Unrated Special Edition)
Hey, Connecticut is a pretty scary place.
Horsemen
Watched this recently. Dennis Quaid plays a grizzled widower cop with two sons, investigating a Seven-like series of murders being committed by a group of killers patterned after the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, who are really into suspension (like, hooks-in-the-back craziness). Fun, if you like Dennis Quaid and wish there was a Seven Part 2.
The Color of Magic
The last TV-movie based on a Terry Pratchett Discworld book, Hogfather, was pretty damn amazing. I haven't seen this one, based on one of his earlier books, but it stars Sean Astin, Tim Curry, Jeremy Irons and Brian Cox. I think that says enough.
