With the sequel to Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween in theaters, the director has decided it's the perfect time to announce that he will next remake The Blob, the 1958 movie about a... well, a blob. From space. It's already been remade, in 1988 with Johnny Drama from Entourage, but we'll ignore that one if it means we'll get a grisly new sci-fi story from Mr. Zombie. Of course, Zombie doesn't have a monopoly on remaking old horror movies, and there are already a slew of re-imaginings in the works. We rounded up info on a few of the more high-profile ones, so you know which movies are currently getting hacked to bits in the editing room and which are just plain dead.
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Say what you will about the idea of remaking the Nightmare movies, at least they got a good, creepy actor to play dream-based serial killer Freddy Krueger. Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen, Human Target) will strap on the glove to play the badly burned, hat-loving murderer, and has said that his Freddy is "less jokey." Add in female lead Katie Cassidy (Melrose Place, Harper's Island) and a director who has music videos for Marilyn Manson and Garbage under his belt, and we might not be able to sleep as its April 2010 release date approaches.
The Wolfman
You'll have to wait a little bit longer to see Benicio Del Toro as a werewolf in this remake of the 1941 original, since this movie has been pushed from November to February of next year. It still has Emily Blunt and Anthony Hopkins in it, though, and it's still directed by Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, Jurassic Park III), so hopefully the delay doesn't mean the film is a stinker.
Hellraiser
The original Hellraiser only came out in 1987, so it seems a little soon for a remake, but considering how the sequels and prequels have watered down the franchise over the years, a fresh start might not be a bad thing. French horror directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury (Inside) were once attached, as was Pascal Laugier (Martyrs), but now the treatment by Hellraiser creator (and the original film's director) Clive Barker has been discarded, and the writers of Saw IV and V have been brought in. This does not bode well.
Children of the Corn
This remake will premiere on the Syfy channel this month, but don't expect a masterpiece. Kandyse McClure (Battlestar's Dualla) and David Anders (Heroes' Adam Monroe) will play the couple who get stranded in a town run by killer children who worship a corn god, and the film is written and directed by the original movie's producer, who also produced Leprechaun 2 and Meatballs 4 but hasn't written or directed much else. If nothing else, it should fit in nicely with the rest of Syfy's film offerings, quality-wise.
Piranha 3-D
The original 1978 Piranha is not only a humorously gory homage to Jaws, it's already had a James Cameron-directed sequel and a nearly line-for-line made-for-TV remake. But finally, somebody is taking piranhas seriously. Alexandre Aja, who's already directed the deadly serious remakes Mirrors and The Hills Have Eyes, is helming this new take on the film, which re-imagines the bred-by-the-military piranhas of the original as prehistoric piranhas freed by an earthquake. The cast is a virtual who's who of movies of the past 30 years -- Elisabeth Shue, Adam Scott, Ving Rhames, Christopher Lloyd, Jerry O'Connell, Dina Meyer, Paul Scheer and Jaws star Richard Dreyfuss -- and they apparently had to dye the lake they shot in red while filming. Did we mention it's in 3-D? Come April 16, we're so there.
Which horror movie remake are you most looking forward to? Which horror movie do you hope never gets remade, if there are any left?

Rob Zombie is apparently remaking The Blob according to Ain't It Cool News.
These remakes need to stop. Now. The new versions just don't have the fun, campy but good qualities. They came up with good ideas in the 70's and 80's in the first place, why can't we do that now?! For crying out, people make fun of movies like Saw and Hostel, but at least they are fresh ideas and not recycled classics!
How many times can you remake a movie where naive kids get hacked up? And Rob Zombie disguising his tasteless gore malthusianism as "homage" to John Carpenter is an insult all on its own. He should've stopped after Devil's Rejects.
I'm probably most disappointed in the Hellraiser news. The whole point in remaking it was to make a version closer to Barker's original vision, and they just discard his treatment and bring on the Saw hacks? Not just ANY Saw hacks either, but the ones behind the laughably bad latest installments?
I'm cautiously excited about a Nightmare On Elm Street reboot. I never really got into those movies because, with the exception of New Nightmare, they were entirely too campy. A "less jokey" Freddy Krueger can only be a good thing, IMO.
Nightmare sounds like it could be good. And congrats to Jackie Earl (who I loved as a kid)for his deserved comeback; good call casting him as Freddy.
Children of the Corn though? Sorry, campy as the original was, nobody's going to replace Courtney Gaines screaming "OUTLANDER"
Remakes these days just mean nudity. Seriously come up with some new ideas.
This is such a great article. Thanks for sharing.
