The mix of awesome and terrible in this week's batch of DVD releases could tear your heart in half. Actually, there's more terrible than awesome, so it will more likely tear your heart into a one-quarter/three-quarters split. ... Okay, one-eighth/seven-eighths.
Flight of the Conchords; The Complete Second Season
When the Conchords began work on the second season, their main concern seemed to be that they had run out of songs to turn into episodes. Hell, even I was concerned, until I heard such awesome new songs as "Sugalumps," "You Don't Have to Be a Prostitute" and "Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor." However, they still found room in a dream sequence in the final episode to dust off their old Russian life raft cannibalism ballad "Petrov, Yelyena and Me," which otherwise would never have made sense in the series. Waste not, want not! Of course, now that there'll be no Season 3, they can stop worrying altogether.
Project Runway: Season 5
You know, I hadn't thought about how, in this long, long wait for Season 6 to start, that the fans were being doubly punished by having the Season 5 DVD withheld from them. Or maybe nobody missed Kenley that much?
The Soloist
I'm surprised this wasn't released in a Criterion edition with a replica Oscar.
Obsessed
Don't steal Beyoncé's man, if you know what's good for you, because she is Foxxy Cleopatra, and she's a whole lotta woman. Luckily, Ali Larter is also triplets.
Race to Witch Mountain (Two-Disc Extended Edition)
Now with more Carla Gugino! And more Dwayne Johnson, of course, but there's no such thing as "less" Dwayne Johnson.
Labor Pains
Lindsay Lohan, you so fake-pregnant!
Mutant Chronicles (2-Disc Collector's Edition)
What do John Malkovich, Ron Perlman, Thomas Jane, and Devon Aoki have in common? They all received a paycheck from this terrible, terrible movie. Based on the role-playing game!
Wolfhound
I had no idea what this Outlander/Beowulf/Pathfinder-looking movie was, so I looked it up, and saw that it was a Russian-made fantasy film, about warriors vs. the gods. They describe it as Conan the Barbarian meets Lord of the Rings, but it looks more like Night Watch meets Clash of the Titans, with a little Ladyhawke thrown in for good measure. The trailer is worth watching.
The Mysteries of Pittsburgh
All I knew about this movie was that it gave Sienna Miller the opportunity to insult Pittsburgh, which is never a good idea, but apparently it's based on a book by Michael Chabon.
Che Part 2: Guerilla
For those of you who have been patiently waiting, and not staging violent uprisings, the conclusion of your Che Guevara biopic. Note: This movie is about guerillas, not gorillas. Don't make the same mistake I did.
