I Want My DVD: Tuesday, October 20, 2009

One of the highest-grossing movies ever comes out on DVD today, and is already destined to make more money on DVD than it would in a sane world. Everything else is small potatoes, but even a small potato is better for you than a big box of chili fries.

See Where the Wild Things Are, Even if You Hate Dave Eggers, Children and Hipster Soundtracks Between all the gorgeous early viral marketing for this movie and the day I actually went to see it, I had gone from over the top psyched about it to actually pretty worried, based on how mixed the reviews have been. But after seeing it, I'm a little baffled by that. It's got a bleeding heart and, OK, maybe not the most sophisticated plot in the world, but it's pretty hard not to like this film as a whole. And it's not like I just go around liking everything, to say the least.

Why Bryan Singer Should Not Return to the X-Men Franchise

When Bryan Singer left the X-Men film franchise to film the reboot of the Superman, comic fans were torn: on the one hand, he was leaving the characters he'd knocked out of the park twice already, in X-Men and X2: X-Men United, but on the other hand he was hopefully going to make Superman cool again. It's a win-win! Well, cut to a few years later, and it's a lose-lose: the retro throwback Superman Returns is underperforming at the box office and Brett Ratner's X-Men: The Last Stand is underperforming in fans' expectations. With Superman in line to get another, more reboot-y reboot, Singer is no longer involved, and is now talking to Fox about rejoining the X-Men franchise. While a small part of us would love to see a proper sequel to the first two decent X-Men movies, we mostly want him to stay far, far away. Here's why.

Chris Pine as Jack Ryan? OK, But Surely We Can Do Better Between Jack Bauer and Jason Bourne I'm not sure we really need a Jack Ryan franchise reboot anymore, but I do have a great deal of nostalgia for the Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford films, and wouldn't mind seeing the character come back from the Ben Affleck debacle of '02. Apparently neither would Paramount, as they have a script for a new film from The Wings of the Dove writer Hossein Amini and a new Jack Ryan in Star Trek (and Princess Diaries 2!) star Chris Pine.

Dear Gerard Butler: You're Never Going to Be Statham Don't get me wrong; I think Gerard Butler is a talented enough guy. I also think he's handsome, funny on talk shows, generally inoffensive, and I found him to be one of the least annoying things about The Ugly Truth. So it's not like I don't think he should be a movie star, because, sure, why shouldn't he? It's just that I'm worried his career path is increasingly molding him to be a lesser Jason Statham in the end, and whether he's been trying to rival the Statham or this whole thing is just a coincidence, I still don't like it.

Where the Wild Things Are: The Ten Greatest Things Spike Jonze Has Ever Filmed

Anticipation for Spike Jonze's latest film, Where the Wild Things Are, has reached an all-time high, and early reviews are skewing towards the positive, giving us all hope that the movie will not only capture the magic of the classic children's book, but live up to Jonze's previous offerings. An unconventional, unusual filmmaker (and occasional actor) who got started making skateboard videos, Jonze moved on to commercial work and music videos before creating two of the most bizarre feature films ever made. In honor of the release of WTWTA, we thought we'd list off the top 10 things Jonze has ever directed, not counting his skateboarding movies, which we would probably appreciate more if we skateboarded, and his commercials, which we wish were longer and not about selling things.

Trailer Without Pity: A Christmas Carol

There have been many great adaptations of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. The updated comedy Scrooged with Bill Murray is a modern classic, and The Muppet Christmas Carol alternates between Michael Caine's fine performance and the Muppets' rampant silliness. And the more traditional interpretations are numerous. So when we heard that the newest interpretation would be fully animated -- by Robert Zemeckis, who last directed Beowulf and The Polar Express -- and most of the roles would be played by Jim "The Grinch" Carrey... well, we got a little nervous. Vloggers Omar G. and Pablo G. watched the same trailer we did, and they have similar reservations. See what they have to say about the level of detail on Scrooge's nose and the imagery of Scrooge shooting through the sky on a rocket in the latest episode of "Trailers Without Pity," embedded below for your viewing pleasure.

I Want My DVD: Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Are we having fun yet? After a trip to the DVD aisle, we'll be having a lot more fun, because this is the week of fun movie releases. Maybe not good movies, but "good" and "fun" don't always go hand-in-hand. Also, "clean."

Stepfather Step-Off: Terry O'Quinn vs. Dylan Walsh

Twenty-two years ago, the world was introduced to Terry O'Quinn. It wasn't his first acting role, but it was the one that would make him a star. The role? The Stepfather. Playing a serial marrier/killer of widows, who takes the place at the head of each ready-to-wear family until the illusion of perfection is inevitably shattered, at which point he slaughters them all and moves on, O'Quinn stood out in the role as a truly disturbed individual. This year, after two sequels (one without O'Quinn), the movie is being remade with Dylan Walsh in the lead role. While we'll reserve total judgment until after we've seen it, we took a look at both actors' resumés to see how they stack up against each other, stepfather to stepfather.

An Education Review: Men, Booze, Homework, the English Countryside and Oscars An Education is a movie that's gotten a lot of critical attention over the past year, so when I finally saw it recently I expected something completely different than what I got. What the movie is is a perfectly enjoyable coming-of-age story that is slightly smarter than its peers, the quaint British film of the year, and likely the launching of a new star in Carey Mulligan. What it isn't is groundbreaking or brilliant, which is what I assumed it was considering all the snooty buzz, but it is worth seeing if you like the genre, and/or want in on this Carey Mulligan action from the ground up.
