I Want My DVD: Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Are we having fun yet? After a trip to the DVD aisle, we'll be having a lot more fun, because this is the week of fun movie releases. Maybe not good movies, but "good" and "fun" don't always go hand-in-hand. Also, "clean."

Drag Me to Hell
It had been so long since Army of Darkness that we forgot what a Sam Raimi horror film is like. The Spider-Man movies, while action-packed and occasionally funny, are like Merchant-Ivory pictures compared to the frenzied, gruesome slapstick of a Raimi horror. This movie has Allison Lohman fight an old lady, a cat, a goat, a handkerchief and a corpse twice, and that's only the beginning. The DVD has both the theatrical version and the extended Director's Cut, and as long as there's no musical number, any Raimi-approved cut is all right by us. Read our original review.

The Proposal
Surprisingly entertaining for a sham-relationship rom-com, this movie is helped by the bitterly sarcastic Ryan Reynolds, a little more defeated than usual, and the ice queen Sandra Bullock, whose awkwardness this time around is at least explained better. Betty White is as delightful as always playing the hipper-than-she-looks grandma, and Oscar Nunez is creepily sexual as Sitka's only stripper. The rest of the cast is serviceable, although an alternate ending starring Niecy Nash as a stewardess was smartly cut.

Hardware
Never before released on DVD, this 1990 sci-fi horror film stars Dylan McDermott as a scavenger in a post-apocalyptic world who finds a killer android's skull and unwittingly brings it back to life. Fangoria called it "one of the best horror movies you've never seen," but that's probably just because Iggy Pop and Lemmy from Motorhead also make appearances.

Land of the Lost
I have to say that I laughed a lot at this. More than I did in Year One, anyway. Is it a smart movie? No. Is it a fun, trippy nostalgia-fest? Sure, why not.

The Stepfather
Because Terry O'Quinn beats Dylan Walsh any day of the week, Shout Factory is re-issuing the original classic. Or the classic original. Your call.

Also out this week:
The Haunted Airman Quick, Robert Pattinson is in a movie! Buy it! Buy it! Buy it!.
Adoration Quick, Scott Speedman is in a movie! Buy it! Buy it! Buy-- Wait, do we care anymore?
Happy Birthday to Me A horror movie from 1981, and all that that entails.
Infestation Chris Marquette and Ray Wise vs. critters.
Where the Day Takes You Some of 1992's finest young actors, homeless on the streets of L.A.
Objectified With a title like that, I wasn't expecting a documentary about product design.
Pets ...I was expecting this 1974 movie, about a teenage runaway who's kept as a pet by a rich art collector.
