One of the highest-grossing movies ever comes out on DVD today, and is already destined to make more money on DVD than it would in a sane world. Everything else is small potatoes, but even a small potato is better for you than a big box of chili fries.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Now with more noise! Yes, Michael Bay follows up his first Transformers movie with more smashing, more screaming, more explosions, more elaborate transformations, more Ebonics and more backstory, including the most preposterous MacGuffin in the history of cinema. At least partially written by Bay while the writer's strike was on, the movie is a sprawling, nonsensical mess... and kind of awesome. I mean, gold-toothed racial caricatures and moms eating pot brownies aside, the fights and the combining and the razor-thin robots are all pretty cool, and even with his pendulous wrecking balls, Devastator is a spectacular monstrosity. And if that doesn't float your boat, you might as well just buy and watch the entire Transformers cartoon series in one fell swoop and flush the memory of the movie out of your system.
100 Feet
Why this movie premiered on the Syfy channel, I have no idea. Famke Janssen, Bobby Cannavale and Ed Westwick in a haunted-house story about a woman under house arrest and the ghost of the abusive husband she killed? I haven't seen it, so it may be awful, but worse than the other ghost movies out there? Doubtful.
Monsoon Wedding (Criterion Collection)
Sure, this movie may have taken the Golden Lion at Venice, but what about Mira Nair's second-greatest film, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love? We need some Criterion Collection Naveen Andrews erotica, stat.
The William Castle Film Collection
Not only do you get the original 13 Ghosts, you also get 13 Frightened Girls, Homicidal, The Old Dark House, Mr. Sardonicus, The Tingler, Strait-Jacket and Zotz! (The exclamation point is Castle's, not ours. We would have put it after The Tingler.)
Cheri
Whenever I see the name of this movie, I always think of Rochelle, Rochelle, "a young woman's erotic journey from Milan to Minsk" from Seinfeld. Yes, I am vaguely aware that that is not the plot of this film.
The Tournament
This can't be right, but according to Amazon, this amazing-looking movie about 12 assassins competing for a cash prize in a small town comes out on DVD today. We're pretty sure this is incorrect, since it just opened Screamfest, but we're so psyched to see Robert Carlyle, Ving Rhames, Kelly Hu and Ian Smolderhottie trying their damnedest to kill each other that we didn't want to risk not mentioning it.
Also out this week:
Blood: The Last Vampire Despite being about a Japanese schoolgirl who hunts vampires, there's no way this live-action movie can be as good as the original anime film.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles (Those Aren't Pillows Edition) The tradition of naming new editions of DVDs after funny lines from the movie must end now.
Peanuts: 1970s Collection, Vol. 1 Finally, the animated Peanuts specials that weren't as good as the 1960s ones!
Sherlock Holmes: The Archive Collection Old Sherlock Holmes movies, shorts, parodies and episodes. B-sides and rarities, basically.
Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead Insert joke about this film series taking a wrong turn or being left for dead here.

Transformers 2 might just be the worst big budget movie ever made. There is no defending it. None. It was utter shit.
I haven't seen it, don't plan to, but I have no problem agreeing with you. The fact that it was one of the highest grossing films of all time makes me sad.
LOL! DVD? you people are still watching movies in SD? Helllloooooo? I downloaded my illegal bluray copy of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen 3 weeks ago. Complete with menus and everything. The sound is top notch, and so are the action sequences, some of which were shot with iMAX cameras. My advice to anyone who's about to give their hard-earned money to amazon or a dvd retail outlet for the DVD, just DON'T... buy the bluray instead, it'll the whole movie experience infinitely better.
And did I mention megan fox in HD? Na, I probably shouldn't go there.
IMDb agrees on the Tournament release. Looks like it's been floating around since Cannes in May at least. If it opened Screamfest, though, IMDb's a little behind, since they don't list a non-DVD release for the US. And Amazon is mysteriously out of stock. So take it for what it's worth.
(And yeah, DaPirate, some of us do still like to do things the legal way and have financial priorities other than buying the latest toys. BluRay is great and all, but if I don't have a player yet it doesn't do me a lot of good, and there are other things I need to spend my money on before I get a player. I know, I know, isn't the world a boring place when there are Luddites like me out there who insist on spending our money on things like paying rent and buying groceries.)
