Ong Bak 2: A Trip Bak in Time

If you were thinking about seeing Ong Bak 2: The Beginning this weekend, but thought, "Y'know, I should probably see Ong Bak: Muay Thai Warrior first..." let me stop you right there. First of all, these are not Harry Potter novels, they're martial arts films. There's no need to worry that you won't know what's going on. All you need to know is that that guy just back-flipped off of an elephant to kick another guy in the face. Second of all, this movie has nothing to do with the first one, which took place in modern times.

This one is about Tien, a prince who is spirited out of his kingdom by a guard when the king is betrayed and he and his wife are murdered. After being saved from a life of slavery, the boy grows to adulthood in a community of martial artists, where he learns... well, everything, basically, making him the most dangerous person on Earth, or at least ancient Thailand. This training is what allows him to eventually, upon reaching Tony Jaa-hood, go back and smack around the slavers who tortured him, then infiltrate the palace to kill a whole bunch of guards and, hopefully, the new king. The final scene, in which he uses all of his training to face an army of black-clad assassins, is one of the most grueling, amazing fight scenes you will ever see involving an elephant, and is well worth sitting through the numerous flashbacks to Tien's youth, where he flirts with a young girl and messes with the town idiot.

Haven't seen it yet but I really want to. I loved the first one and the things that Tony Jaa can do are insane in the best way possible.

Ya know, not bad @ aLL, considering it's Tony Jaa's first directoriaL effort...Very lucid, and dream-like at times...Kinda like an R-Rated version of Mowgli...haha...set in Thailand, natch...
