Twenty-two years ago, the world was introduced to Terry O'Quinn. It wasn't his first acting role, but it was the one that would make him a star. The role? The Stepfather. Playing a serial marrier/killer of widows, who takes the place at the head of each ready-to-wear family until the illusion of perfection is inevitably shattered, at which point he slaughters them all and moves on, O'Quinn stood out in the role as a truly disturbed individual. This year, after two sequels (one without O'Quinn), the movie is being remade with Dylan Walsh in the lead role. While we'll reserve total judgment until after we've seen it, we took a look at both actors' resumés to see how they stack up against each other, stepfather to stepfather.
Most Famous Role
O'Quinn: Lost
As the miraculously un-handicapped John Locke, O'Quinn rocks an awesome eye scar and messianic beatitude that stands in sharp contrast to his crummy life story pre-plane crash. Also, he throws a pretty mean knife-in-the-back.
Walsh: Nip/Tuck
Originally the more grounded, boring member of a pair of flashy plastic surgeons, Walsh's Sean McNamara has slowly descended to the level of his hedonistic partner Christian Troy, and even faked being a paraplegic for a while.
Winner: O'Quinn
First Regular TV Gig
O'Quinn: The Doctors
O'Quinn played Dr. Jerry Dancy in this daytime soap, which saw a lot of big names go through its doors in its 20 years on the air, including Ellen Burstyn, Alec Baldwin and Kathleen Turner. Unfortunately, he was on it during its waning final years, when ratings bottomed out, so nobody knows this.
Walsh: Kate & Allie
At the age of 24, Walsh played the boyfriend of Allie's daughter, Jennie, which gives him only one degree of separation from Jane Curtin.
Winner: Walsh
Preferred Roles
O'Quinn: Military Men
His superior, authoritative demeanor seems to translate well to military roles, which he's played his whole career, most visibly as a colonel on NCIS, an admiral on JAG and Star Trek, a general on West Wing and Harsh Realm, the assistant director of the FBI on Alias... Hell, he was even the Launch Director in the movie Space Camp. So, basically, O'Quinn has protected most of America at some point.
Walsh: Cops
Something about Walsh's average, everyday look makes him perfect for the cop life. He was a patrolman on the short-lived series Brooklyn South, a detective in Blood Work, and a cop-turned-robber in The Almost Perfect Bank Robbery.
Winner: O'Quinn
After-School Special Experience
O'Quinn: The Hand Me Down Kid
This ABC Afterschool Special starred Tracey Gold as a girl who borrows her sister's bike when she gets tired of hand-me downs, only to have it get stolen. O'Quinn plays her dad.
Walsh: Soldier Boys
In this CBS Schoolbreak Special, Walsh plays a teenager who engages in fantasy war games with his friends, until it spills over into real life. The detective investigating the crime was played by James Earl Jones.
Winner: Walsh
Film Debut
O'Quinn: Heaven's Gate
O'Quinn played an army captain (see?) in this saga of cattle barons vs. poor settlers, one of the costliest flops in movie history.
Walsh: Loverboy
Walsh played a jerk trying to steal Patrick Dempsey's girl in this movie about a pizza delivery boy and part-time gigolo.
Winner: Walsh
Historical Roles Played
O'Quinn: Howard Hughes in The Rocketeer
Long before Leonardo DiCaprio played him on screen, O'Quinn brought to life the aviation pioneer in this movie about a stolen prototype jetpack.
Walsh: Jim Shemwell in Lost Holiday: The Jim and Suzanne Shemwell Story
Walsh played one half of an estranged married couple who are trapped in a blizzard while on vacation. Leonardo DiCaprio has not played this role yet.
Winner: O'Quinn
Breakout Movie
O'Quinn: Stepfather
Of the movie, Roger Ebert wrote: "What often happens... is that in an otherwise flawed film there are a couple of things that are wonderful. The Stepfather has one wonderful element: Terry O'Quinn's performance." O'Quinn would go on to appear in the sequel, but not the third and final chapter.
Walsh: Congo
As a scientist who taught a gorilla how to talk through a sign language-interpreting voice box, Walsh faced off with killer, Bruce Campbell-hating gorillas in the heart of Africa. Luckily, Ernie Hudson, Tim Curry and Mr. Eko were there to help.
Winner: O'Quinn
Rutger Hauer Connection
O'Quinn: Blind Fury
In this modernized Zatoichi movie, Rutger Hauer played a blind soldier, taught by Vietnamese villagers to use a samurai sword, who protects a friend's son when his mother is killed. O'Quinn played the friend who was mixed up with a bad crowd.
Walsh: Arctic Blue
Playing an amateur marshal and environmentalist in Alaska, Walsh must bring a murderous fur trapper (Hauer) in to the authorities and fend off the killer's fur-trapper friends, as well.
Winner: O'Quinn
WINNER: It's Terry O'Quinn by a nose!

Walsh also played the creepy principal in one of the stories in the recent horror flick "Trick R' Treat". And did quite well in the role, at that.
It's so weird thinking that Terry O'Quinn ever had hair...but there's the evidence.
Terry O'Quinn was in "The Cutting Edge" 'Nuff said.
@Chris: Word.
In my book there was no contest. His roles on LOST and Alias have earned O'Quinn a permanent place in my heart.
Until Lost, O'Quinn was one of those serviceable actors you could get to play the authoritative figure. Now, he has a role everyone will remember him for and IMO, justifiably so. Terry O'Quinn has paid his dues.
O'Quinn by a mile, not by a nose.
How could you possibly forget Terry O'Quinn in the awesome Millenium? Best.show.ever.
That was not Dylan Walsh in "Trick R' Treat," it was Dylan Baker. I understand, they're as easy to confuse as Bill Paxton and Bill Pullman.
gf120581: your it was Dylan Baker. I just say Trick R Treat last wk. But I thought it was Bill Paxton. I get him and Dylan Walsh confuse
Dylan Walsh is a fine actor and very good-looking, but Terry O'Quinn is the best of the best. He'll get my vote every time.

Terry O'Quinn also has a connection to Hauer through Alias, they were both in the second season on either side of the Alliance take down.
