This Is It: 7 Things We Learned About Michael Jackson

This Is It was an eye opener in many ways. Not only did it show us an extremely bare-bones version of what might have become the most spectacular concert series in the history of music, it also showed us a still-phenomenal Michael Jackson taking a hands-on approach to bring the music and performance up to the level he wanted. Granted, we would have liked to hear him sing a little bit more (most of his songs he barely oralized, in order to conserve his voice and perfect his moves), but we did hear and see a few things that shone a little light on the man and his methods.

1. Dancers worship him. Judging by the interviews that open the film, being a dancer and simply auditioning for MJ is like being a Catholic and meeting the Pope. I guess actually dancing for him is like being one of the Pope's backup dancers.

2. MJ had no fear. When told that the crane arm he was on was at its lowest setting and could go higher, MJ said, "Why did you tell me that? Of course I want to go higher." Thank God nobody told him about the prototype jetpacks.

3. Nothing beats the original "Thriller." I was incredibly excited when I realized we were about to see new footage filmed in 3-D for the "Thriller" portion of the show, but then I saw that it featured a Valkyrie ghost swinging from a chandelier, zombie dancers who just kind of pointed at the camera, and a giant, CGI black widow spider for no discernible reason. There was even a practical version of it that came out on stage with MJ inside. Apparently, "Thriller" was a prequel to Lord of the Rings.

4. He apparently chooses his band based on how strange/cool their names are. Orianthi Panagaris, Alex Al, Bashiri Johnson, Mo Pleasure, Tommy Organ (not an organist) and Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett were among the on-stage musicians for This Is It. James Smith? Rejected.

5. MJ loves him some green screen. In the "Smooth Criminal" portion of the doc, we get to see him sitting in a club in black-and-white with James Cagney, watching Rita Hayworth perform her song from Gilda, until Humphrey Bogart chases him out of the club and shoots a machine gun at him. MJ jumps out of a window, sending flying glass everywhere and bullets flying by in Matrix-style bullet time, and it's all very exciting and awesome. There's another sequence where they film his ten backup dancers in SWAT gear and digitally duplicate them to stretch into infinity on the screen behind him. Apparently, even they were no match for Bogie.

6. His rehearsal clothes are same as his regular clothes. No sweatpants, no T-shirts, just shiny button-downs and metallic jackets. Laundry day at the Jackson house can probably be seen from space.

7. Meanwhile, his stage outfits are designed by Swedish scientists. Although none are actually worn in the documentary, descriptions of the costumes being prepared sounded incredibly impressive, especially the light-up suit for "Billie Jean," which was apparently being worked on by scientists in Europe. Costume makers had also bought 300,000 Swarovski crystals to decorate his clothing with, and applying them supposedly required eye protection. And the whole show would have started with MJ stepping out of a robot suit covered with TV screens. We're pretty sure we saw that in a Japanese cartoon once.

That actually was Vincent Price rapping during the Thriller performance. It was the unused second verse he recorded. It was released on the special edition of Thriller in 2001.

I learned that he was really trying to make the world a better place in so much of his music and the love and paternal instincts toward his dancers and musicians came across so easily so loud and clear in the small moments in this film and only in Michael's sweet way. He was confident, sexy, and yes he still had "it".
The "Michael wound" has opened yet again for me but how grateful I am that I had a chance to appreciate his genius and his humanity.

At 50 and on the verge of death, MJ could still outsing and outdance any current pop stars less than half his age. It was also cool to see how specific his visions for how everything should sound and look were, and how he pushed for perfection, but so politely.

I learned that everything Michael said all of those years was true to the end. The world's critical tone was wrong when it came to MJ. I never believed the media but often found myself confused. I am confused no longer. We had someone so pure in thought and action that we couldn't handle it.

I've watched other rehearsal videos of Michael Jackson's and this movie, for all the editing, was very true to form- a dedicated, hardworking artist, a perfectionist, a performer deeply knowledgeable of not only his craft, but of the whole of a production.

He was really marvelous, despite the tragic implications and end of his life - because he was so obsessed with his art, seeing him exulting and struggling in those rehearsals, I'd say he probably worked himself to death.

A true shame but he left us a great gift.

MJ wanted the message of his concerts to be environmental awareness which is definitely admirable however I wonder if he had any idea how much of a "carbon foot print" he was creating with this ambitious production? I wonder if he had planned to have environmental groups at the concert with info on how individuals could do their part in helping protect the planet. Just curious...:-)

That aside I saw the movie and thought it was great! MJ was definitely in fine form. Albeit skinny…but moving and singing well. What an exciting concert experience it would have been!! How incredibly tragic that he didn't live to present his dream which he was clearly committed to doing.

R.I.P. MJ!!

Michael Jackson was simply a genius. For years, the media always seemed to make him appear bizarre and out of touch with reality. Maybe he was too - for those who are close-minded enough to believe that. Because this movie shows how caring and tender and real he truly was. Remember, when this movie was filmed, it wasn't intended to be shown in a public theater. It even says so in the beginning. It was for his own private collection. So he wasn't 'performing' his behavior, this was truly him in his finest hours.

If Michael Jackson wasn't the King of Pop, he would have been arrested and either thrown in jail, or a state-sponsored psychiatric facility, years ago. The man went beyond "inappropriate" with his behavior around children. He would send his people around trolling for boys to invite to the Neverland Ranch, where he fancied himself a god and they were his little angels (there is a huge statue of him as a god with little boy angels groping at him at the ranch).

Was he talented? Hell yeah. Probably the best performer of all time. Singing, dancing, there was nothing the guy couldn't do on a stage, and his concerts were legendary.

But I'm sorry, it doesn't excuse his behavior off the stage. If Ike Turner was more talented, would you forgive him for beating Tina?

I learned that once again the majority can be blinded by bs. It's the Roman Polanski puzzle. An admitted child rapist revered because of his "talent".
I don't know if Jackson ever touched a child with sexual intention but I do know he treated his own children like pets. I do know he was a drug addict risking the safety and happiness of his own children because he was so mentally ill he had literally lost the ability to soothe and settle himself enough to be able to sleep. Think about that for a moment, he couldn't sleep under any circumstances other than having an IV inserted and a general anesthetic infused. I do know he manipulated those around him so he could remain a drug addict and that he had no intention of ever stopping.
You all may be right, he may have been a brilliant performer but he never wrote a song by himself, he never "created" anything independent of a team dedicated to providing him with their brilliance so he could benefit from it.
He had choreographers that planned his dancing, he had song writers that wrote his music and he had experts that created all the special effects for his videos and concerts.
So what did Micheal actually create?
He used computer manipulation to create his "voice" so even his singing isn't his own.
So Micheal Jackson was a creation of others, a father that refused to accept responsibility for the safety of his children, a drug addict manipulating everyone around to get the drugs he needed......I see nothing within this mans life to celebrate and if his name wasn't Micheal Jackson everyone here would be calling him a douchebag.
How about we celebrate the artists that wrote the music? How about we celebrate the dancers and choreographers who were willing to step into the shadows and let Micheal use them?
How about we celebrate the technicians that created the voice of Jackson?
Why can we never see past celebrity?
We should be celebrating the survival skills of his children, the fact that they managed to survive this man is amazing.
It always fascinates me that so many can remove the person from the celebrity....it's those people that created "Micheal", never caring that what they wanted from Micheal was the very thing that was killing him as a human being...and you wont stop even when he is already dead.

moia:
Michael did write many (though not all) of his songs. Just some of the examples are Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough, The Girl is Mine (with McCartney), Billie Jean, Beat It, 9 of the 11 songs on his Bad album (all except Man in the Mirror and Just Good Friends). He even played the drums for Beat It.

He may have had choreographers, but there is no doubt that he came up with many of his movements himself and helped out with the process.

As for his personal life, yes, it may be 'weird' for a grown man to share a bed (even if not sexual, which I personally believe Michael did not believe his actions to be), however, it's no more weird than it is for a parent to allow their child to sleep over at a grown man's house.

Something else I took away from it (other than his pure genius) was how badly I felt for all of those people involved in the concert - in particular the dancers - who had their dreams dashed when he passed away.

I actually didn't learn much about MJ except that he had a lot more energy at 50 than I do at 35. This movie reminded me of the Making of Thriller where you got to see Michael acting like a normal human being.

Moia, Michael wrote or co-wrote the majority of his songs. That's why the Jacksons left Motown because they weren't allowed to write and produce their own stuff.

And usagi, the main purpose of this concert series was to pay off those creditors.

All criticisms about Michael have just a name ENVY. I learned that when a person sells his son's dignity and his own there will always be someone wanting to pay for it and since you criticize michael you have to critize this people too everybody should go to jail and many of those ones who criticizes him REALLY wanted to sleep with him to get his money.
The same people who created Michael made his brothers why don't they have the same success that Michael?
I learned that everybody claims to be worried with michael's children, children should have been removed from him and what about those ones from the mothers who let them sleep with him? I know why 'cause they are rich and those ones who stays with them will get a lot of money.
I learned nobody can live 24 hours a day being judged, ridiculed, humiliated and support it.
Many people for less things become addicted in illegal drugs, drinks etc.
I learned the main thing only GOD can judge people.
I learned those people who were working with him were not children to be manipulated by him, they were adults. The dancers could even be, they were his fans, but the others not, they were rich people.
I learned nobody criticizes that person who has nothing.
I learned a person can live the way she wants since she doesn't do anything wrong no matter how strange it can be for others. We don't have to do things to follow society's pattern. The most important thing is to be happy.
I learned we can say I love you to our friends all the time before we die and it can be too late
I learned we have to do our job the best we can
I learned that those people who criticizes Michael listen to his music and watch his films and I wonder why if I believed he was a pedophile I wouldn't buy anything from him not to make him more rich to go on molesting boys and I wouldn't even be in this site writing these things.
I learned those people in this site criticizing him have no moral to do so.
I learned when you have money and pay a doctor for a prescription, doctor gives us without caring if it is dangerous. The most important is your money not your health.
I learned nobody believes in rich's integrity 'cause nobody can become rich honestly and by his own talent.
I learned rich is not always guilty
I learned poor is not always innocent
I learned rich is not always innocent
I learned poor is not always guilty
I learned character is irrespective of our social condition
I learned God didn't forgive Eva and Adam 'cause they were seduced by the snake. So why do people condenm michael and forgive the boys' parents?
I learned when you have money it is difficult to get friends 'cause most of them just want your money.
I learned all that journalist Martin Bashir who made living with michael jackson said he saw nothing inappropriate in michael's behaviour.
I learned Michael winned many suits against those ones who lied about him.
I learned media do anything to a story even kill a person as they did with princess Diana.
I learned when you accuse a person of something you must prove.
I learned if you want to blackmail a person you have to creat false proofs.
I learned when you are a dishonest person and somebody has proofs against you, you pay for the proofs and get them back and destroy them, you don't let everybody to know and just pay after.
I learned children must be loved by their fathers and not to be money machine.
I learned a person who has a disorder which makes her feels ugly doesn't go round dating as a normal person. It's more difficult.
I learned we can use our talent to help other people.
I learned a tramautic experience during the childhood can persists the whole life.
I learned media and some people was more worried about michael's appearance than himself.
I learned nobody needs to have an eccentric appearance to be a criminal or a freak.
I learned nobody needs a Neverland to molest children
I learned nobody needs to sleep with a child to molest her.
I learned only God is King.
I learned when we read a new we have to see what makes sense and what doesn't make sense.
why a father who pays thousands of dollars to have a child will throw her through window in front of a crowd?
I learned a person is just manipulated when she wants.

I learned that I love MJ as much now as I ever did before and he was a Genius in every way. I learned that many people who never gave him a chance now see him as I have seen him all along and I am thankful for that.

Most of all I learned that he was in No way ready to die. Michael was beautiful inside and out and a true inspiration for all of us.

As far as all of you who choose to be ugly about past accusations.. he flat did not have it in him to do any of those things, if there could have been an angel on Earth it was Michael Jackson. He was pure and innocent and talented to add to his beauty. I am just so sorry the world is now without him. I will always love him and defend his innocence to my death. I just wish he did not live his life being so traumatized and with the inner pain he endured.

* I will always love you Michael and I am SO Sorry people have been so cruel to you and misjudged you in so many ways.

Great to see so many ignorant idiots here talking about something they don't know and are too lazy to do some research. Their comments will live on forever in the interweb as a testimony to how stupid people once were. I can point you to many analytical articles supporting Michael Jackson's innocence, but of course you'll say I'm biased and I search only for articles supporting Michael Jackson. Well then, dumbass, do your own research!! Read both sides of the tale and see who have more credibility. If you won't bother to do that, just admit that you want to stay ignorant and stupid.

In case there are some people who need to be spoonfed about the truth, here is one (of many) article about the case written by an attorney and legal analyst:

Moia: November 3, 2009 10:45 AM Yes, like Veruca said Micheal did write and produce many of his own hits and was widely aknowledged as a very gifted singer. Especially when he was a boy. As for his dancing, he himself had commented on how one of his biggest influences in dance early on was James Brown. Brown was not a trained dancer but he was an intuitive natural and gifted showman. You can see his influence in MJ's spins and fast foot work from the early 70's onward. Before his death James Brown commented on how MJ mimicked some of Brown's moves but that he also had his own moves that were part of MJ's influential and unique style. MJ has said in the past that the "moonwalk" that is so closely associated with him was something he picked up from watching street dancers and refined with the help of a professional dance instructor. It was originally called a "back-slide". Many of you probably know that street or break-dancing was huge in the 70's and 80's. Those influences are also very evident in the locking-popping-gliding movements MJ used and continued to use for the rest of his career. Overall the point I'd like to make is that MJ collaborated with choreographers and song writers along the way but he made significant contributions of his own which are well documented. He was very much engaged in his own career and subsequent success. I'm sure that any of the professionals that worked with him over the years would say the same and acknowledge he didn't passively wait around for someone to give him direction. This was a person with serious skills! Also he wasn't a manufactured corporate act like many artists have been over the years. Many of wich have long since disappeared. (Millie-Vanilli, Tiffany, New Kids On The Block, Vanilla Ice, etc.) The only thing that Moia and I do agree on is that there were people who fed of his celebrity and didn't seem to care about him as a human being. As long as the money kept rolling in that's all that mattered to many. Very sad but nothing new. There will always be parasites. When MJ's bones are picked clean they'll scatter and find a new host to feed off of.

I don't know if Jackson was a pedophile. I rather suspect he wasn't, that the whole having kids sleep in his bed was just a reaction to a lost childhood. It's still way inappropriate and creepy, though.

What I do know, though, is that Jackson as an artist is the biggest sham ever put over on a gullible public. There's nothing -- not one single thing -- that he ever did that rose above the level of "mildly interesting pop music". A talented dancer? I suppose, but who cares? He's supposed to be a SINGER. I could not care less about his dancing skills, his songs are average-to-mediocre.

His main genius was recognizing something somone else did that was good, taking it and watering it down to the point where it had mass appeal. He was the Microsoft of the music business.
