This Is It: 7 Things We Learned About Michael Jackson

This Is It was an eye opener in many ways. Not only did it show us an extremely bare-bones version of what might have become the most spectacular concert series in the history of music, it also showed us a still-phenomenal Michael Jackson taking a hands-on approach to bring the music and performance up to the level he wanted. Granted, we would have liked to hear him sing a little bit more (most of his songs he barely oralized, in order to conserve his voice and perfect his moves), but we did hear and see a few things that shone a little light on the man and his methods.

1. Dancers worship him. Judging by the interviews that open the film, being a dancer and simply auditioning for MJ is like being a Catholic and meeting the Pope. I guess actually dancing for him is like being one of the Pope's backup dancers.

2. MJ had no fear. When told that the crane arm he was on was at its lowest setting and could go higher, MJ said, "Why did you tell me that? Of course I want to go higher." Thank God nobody told him about the prototype jetpacks.

3. Nothing beats the original "Thriller." I was incredibly excited when I realized we were about to see new footage filmed in 3-D for the "Thriller" portion of the show, but then I saw that it featured a Valkyrie ghost swinging from a chandelier, zombie dancers who just kind of pointed at the camera, and a giant, CGI black widow spider for no discernible reason. There was even a practical version of it that came out on stage with MJ inside. Apparently, "Thriller" was a prequel to Lord of the Rings.

4. He apparently chooses his band based on how strange/cool their names are. Orianthi Panagaris, Alex Al, Bashiri Johnson, Mo Pleasure, Tommy Organ (not an organist) and Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett were among the on-stage musicians for This Is It. James Smith? Rejected.

5. MJ loves him some green screen. In the "Smooth Criminal" portion of the doc, we get to see him sitting in a club in black-and-white with James Cagney, watching Rita Hayworth perform her song from Gilda, until Humphrey Bogart chases him out of the club and shoots a machine gun at him. MJ jumps out of a window, sending flying glass everywhere and bullets flying by in Matrix-style bullet time, and it's all very exciting and awesome. There's another sequence where they film his ten backup dancers in SWAT gear and digitally duplicate them to stretch into infinity on the screen behind him. Apparently, even they were no match for Bogie.

6. His rehearsal clothes are same as his regular clothes. No sweatpants, no T-shirts, just shiny button-downs and metallic jackets. Laundry day at the Jackson house can probably be seen from space.

7. Meanwhile, his stage outfits are designed by Swedish scientists. Although none are actually worn in the documentary, descriptions of the costumes being prepared sounded incredibly impressive, especially the light-up suit for "Billie Jean," which was apparently being worked on by scientists in Europe. Costume makers had also bought 300,000 Swarovski crystals to decorate his clothing with, and applying them supposedly required eye protection. And the whole show would have started with MJ stepping out of a robot suit covered with TV screens. We're pretty sure we saw that in a Japanese cartoon once.
