I Want My DVD: Tuesday, December 8, 2009

Harry Potter fans, rejoice, because more versions of HP's movies come out than you can shake a wand at. Accio multi-disc gift set!

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Two-Disc Limited Special Edition)
Did you hear about the preview footage going around from the final two Potter films, based on The Deathly Hallows? It's gone now, but it comes from the new Half-Blood Prince DVD, which is just one reason to pick it up. For starters, it's one of the darker installments in the septology. For another, it's full of British kids snogging, if you know what it is and are into that sort of thing. Plus: new cast interviews, a year in the life of J.K. Rowling and a sneak peek at the new Harry Potter theme park they're building! The first two movies have also been reissued as Ultimate Editions, with four discs of extended versions and extras, and if you need all six movies so far, the Harry Potter Years 1-6 Giftset will give a lucky someone something to do between now and November 2010.

Julie & Julia
Amy Adams and Meryl Streep were so well-received as the titular blogger/chef combo that a sequel is in the works, titled Julie and Julius. In this one, Julie decides to cook everything on the menu of her neighborhood Orange Julius, and Streep plays the role of 1920s inventor and beverage-stand entrepreneur Julius Freed. In the meantime, you can also buy the original with a J&J commemorative shopping bag.

Public Enemies (Two-Disc Special Edition)
You'd think we would be more excited about Jack Sparrow and Batman in a battle of wits. Curse you, Michael Mann, for not making us care more!

The Cove
Dolphins are being killed in Japan, and there's nothing you can do about it except watch this movie and let Japan know that you know.

AK 100: 25 Films of Akira Kurosawa (Criterion Collection)
A collection of the director's 25 greatest early films, including Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Rashomon, Stray Dog and The Hidden Fortress. It doesn't include 1990's Dreams, sadly, but hopefully that one'll make the next definitive, career-spanning collection.

Also out this week:
The Dog Who Saved Christmas Something tells us this dog of a movie saved Christmas for Dean Cain's family.
World's Greatest Dad Robin Williams in a well-received black comedy? Well shave our backs and call us Mork.
Moonlight Serenade Another movie with singing Amy Adams in it. Not exactly Enchanted, but still.
