I Want My DVD: Tuesday, December 15, 2009

Bastards, drunks, rodents and car salesmen -- the unsavory become savory in this week's DVD releases, with three blockbusters coming out as well as a couple of fun comedies and a few interesting documentaries, for those of you who think the real world is plenty interesting enough. Weirdos.

The Hangover (Unrated Two-Disc Special Edition)
Fans of NBC's Thursday-night line-up have two reasons to buy this DVD. Not only does the movie star Ed Helms (The Office), it also features Ken Jeong (Community), and both get to shine on the DVD extras. Helms provides commentary on the theatrical cut with Zach Galifianakis and Bradley Cooper, and gets to freestyle a bit when the three improvise a song about being best friends. Meanwhile. Jeong most certainly shows up in the 100 extra pictures from the missing camera we're shown, and there's 7 minutes of his on-set improvisation for you to watch. That's a whole lotta Jeong.

Inglourious Basterds (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Could this be the picture that wins Quentin Tarantino the Academy Award for Best Picture? Let's think: Historical setting. International cast. Reality-bending ending. Hitler. The Coens took it by going the literary route -- could QT take it by giving his own twisted take on war? With ten nominees, anything can happen. This DVD set certainly doesn't skimp, with bonus features of extended and alternate scenes, a roundtable discussion with Tarantino and Pitt, the entire Nation's Pride Nazi propaganda film featured in the movie, the making of Nation's Pride and a salute to the original Inglorious Bastards. Bastards, we salute you!

G-Force (Three-Disc DVD/Blu-ray Combo)
Two Zach Galifianakis movies out on the same day? Manna from Heaven! Although calling this a "Zach Galifianakis movie" is like calling Garfield a Breckin Meyer movie. The stars are obviously the secret-agent guinea pigs (and mole) with the voices of Penelope Cruz, Sam Rockwell, Tracy Morgan and Nicolas Cage. You know they're the stars, because they're the ones who get to drive around in souped-up hamster balls and spout hip catchphrases. Adorably sassy!

Taking Woodstock
At Woodstock, Liev Schreiber cross-dresses for the first time (or so he would have us believe) since Mixed Nuts, while Demetri Martin questions his sexuality. Welcome back, Ang Lee

Also out this week:
Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie Weren't they one of the gangs in The Warriors? "Wizards, come out and pla-ay!"
The Sherlock Holmes Collection Despite having the same name as a TV release this week, this contains three Holmes films.
The Roller Derby Chronicles Hopefully, this documentary collection is more exciting than the Chronicles of Narnia or Riddick.
Know Your Mushrooms This doc about shroom enthusiasts wins "best title" honors this week.
Herb & Dorothy Two working-class art collectors become important patrons in this doc. It's a rags-to-canvas story!
