I should say, though, that I didn't hate this movie. It was a perfectly fine, if disposable, action movie. The fight scenes and explosions looked great and were capably shot, Damon is as enjoyable to watch as he always is, and the supporting cast was peppered with very likable people, with Amy Ryan, Greg Kinnear and Brendan Gleeson (who is awesome no matter what he's in, I just... hope he never attempts an American accent again after this) rounding out the cast.

But at the film's core lies a deepy flawed and laughable premise: that one American soldier figured out that the quest for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq was a farce -- singlehandedly, over the course of one day -- and then blew the whistle on the whole war (it was easy because the conspiracy amounts to one mustache-twirling guy behind it all) by e-mailing what basically amounts to a blog entry he wrote to all the world's news outlets. It's quite possibly the laziest, stupidest oversimplification of a hugely complicated situation I've ever seen. I mean, Jack Bauer can't even do shit that big, and that show doesn't even try to be realistic.

It's just so fast and ridiculous that it continuously takes you out of the story. The film is shot like this gritty, authentic war movie, and then has this like Clive Cussler plot slapping the aesthetic in the face the whole time; it's a disconnect, and it hurts the viewing experience.

On the other hand, you're not going to get a half-decent action movie until Kick Ass opens next month, so maybe you should get your fix now.
