I Want My DVD: Tuesday, March 2, 2010

While they may not be nominated for any Academy Awards (rightfully or not), this week's movie releases are all certainly a lot of fun, and visually spectacular in a variety of ways. Watch them with the sound off, and they'll still be pretty damn entertaining. In a couple of cases they might even improve! (2012, I'm looking in your direction.)

Ponyo
Hayao Miyazaki's latest animated masterpiece/psychedelic acid trip is out on DVD! Chronicling the Little Mermaid-esque story about a little fish girl who unleashes uncontrollable forces in her quest to become a real girl, you can also get it in a combination DVD/Blu-ray set or with a plush Ponyo, because why not? And as if that wasn't enough Miyazaki for you, special two-disc editions of the amazing My Neighbor Totoro, Castle in the Sky and Kiki's Delivery Service are all being released today as well. As Ed McMahon would say, "HAY-AOOOOOOO!"

Gentlemen Broncos
If you liked the films of Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre), then you'll probably love this movie. Also, if you like Flight of the Conchords, since Jemaine Clement is also in it. Also, if you love Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, since Sam Rockwell also does ridiculous, ridiculous things in it. Also, if you love Krull, since this movie has the exact same Cyclops makeup in it. If you like none of these movies or TV shows, then there is absolutely nothing we can do for you, because you are beyond help. Except to maybe say that it has more of a Wes Anderson vibe to it than prior Hess films. [Our original review.].

Bitch Slap
Does anyone ever set out to make a B movie? Or are they all aiming for A movies and ending up with B movies? Some of them must be aiming for cheesy good times over actual quality, because otherwise we can't imagine this raunchy, tongue-in-cheek homage to Faster Pussycat, Kill Kill and other '60s and '70s exploitation films would even exist. The actresses are largely unknown, but with supporting performances by Kevin Sorbo, Lucy Lawless and most of the rest of the cast of Hercules and Xena Warrior Princess the self-parody factor is high.

Cold Souls
We love Paul Giamatti's soul -- why would he ever want to remove it and store it in a cryogenic facility? That's the premise of this film, in which his soul is hijacked and sold on the black market in Russia, for some reason. Whatever that reason may be, it at least inspired the movie's creepy "Paul Giamatti Russian nesting doll" poster, so we guess that's as good a place as any for it to end up. Plus, Emily Watson, David Strathairn and Lauren Ambrose are in the movie!

Where the Wild Things Are
You've probably heard mixed things about this movie. "It's boring, but it's beautiful. It's sad, but it's whimsical. It's confusing, but it's too simple." Well, you really need to see it and judge for yourself. You owe Spike Jonze that much for directing Being John Malkovich, and you owe Maurice Sendak for writing such a kick-ass kid's book. Sendak himself has said he likes it, and isn't that really the only review that matters? [Our original review.]

Elvis
Before horror maven John Carpenter introduced Kurt Russell to the Thing, had him escape from New York, and got him into big trouble in Little China, he took him to Graceland. One of the few movies Carpenter directed that he didn't also write the music for, obviously.

Ninja
We can likely thank the awesomeness of last year's Ninja Assassin for allowing this movie to get made, or at least released on DVD. They could have called it American Ninja, since that's what it's about, but the main character is actually English -- actor Scott Adkins was Ryan Reynolds' stand-in as Weapon XI in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

2012
Despite what the movie would like you to believe, you shouldn't be in any rush to see it. 2013 or 2014 is plenty soon enough.

Also out this week:
Alice in Wonderland (1933) Starring Cary Grant as the Mock Turtle, W.C. Fields as Humpty Dumpty and Gary Cooper as the White Knight. We are not joking.
Alice in Wonderland (1966) Starring Sir John Gielgud as the Mock Turtle, Peter Sellers as the King of Hearts and Peter Cook as the Mad Hatter. Still not joking.
Clash of the Titans A re-issue of the original film, the one with the cute mechanical owl. We miss you, Bubo!
Believe: The Eddie Izzard Story This sounds like a Lifetime movie, and yet it's a documentary about a comedian in drag.
The Wraith: Special Edition Randy Quaid hunts Charlie Sheen to stop him from drag racing. It's like watching the news today!
The Private Lives of Pippa Lee So Blake Lively is going to grow up to look like Robin Wright Penn? Interesting.

See this week's TV releases in TV on DVD!
