BLOGS
Sandra Bullock's Oscar-winning role comes out on DVD today, but we're personally more excited about the movie with the talking woodland creatures.
Fantastic Mr. Fox
The newest and most anthropomorphic Wes Anderson movie ever is now on DVD (as well as on your cable provider's Movies On Demand channel), which means that it's a great day for both fans of Anderson's quirky films and fans of movie adaptations of Roald Dahl children's books. The Witches, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda... In my wholly Anderson-biased eye, Mr. Fox leaves them all in the dust, and gives other Anderson films a run for their money, as well. Because only in a movie about a fox and his badger accountant could George Clooney and Bill Murray circle each other and growl before resuming their discussion about the real estate market.
Toy Story and Toy Story 2 (Blu-ray/DVD Combo Packs)
By now, you've hopefully seen the awesome trailer for Toy Story 3, and that has reminded you just how much the first two movies kick ass, emotionally speaking. Whether you don't yet have them on DVD or you want to upgrade to Blu-ray, here's a chance to cover all of your bases and watch them a bajillion times before the next movie arrives in June, along with their two totally different sneak-peek featurettes about TS3.
The Blind Side
We'd make a joke about Sandra Bullock winning an Oscar for her role in this sappy family-'n'-football movie, but somehow it seems inappropriate now. It's like the plot to one of her movies come to life. (Also available via Movies on Demand as of today.)
The African Queen
The first-ever DVD release of Humphrey Bogart's only Oscar-winning role (as a boozy skipper in World War One-era Africa enlisted to help destroy a German gunboat) would be worth it for the newly-re-mastered digital transfer and the behind-the-scenes documentary alone. However, it's also available in a Commemorative Edition, which includes postcards, a CD of the radio play and a copy of Katherine Hepburn's memoir of the filmmaking experience. We're leaning towards that one, although as long as it has Bogie's stomach growling (below), we're on board.
Brothers
Not to be confused with Four Brothers, in which Mark Wahlberg and Andre 3000 play siblings hunting for their mother's killer. Man, if a PTSD-afflicted Tobey Maguire had been in that movie, things would have turned out much differently. (Also available via Movies on Demand today.)
The Men Who Stare at Goats
We so wanted to like this movie. That cast! Clooney! Bridges! Spacey! McGregor! That premise! Psychic soldiers fighting a secret war! That title! Okay, the title was probably the weak point. Well, one of the weak points.
After Dark Horrorfest: Volume 4
You can buy the eight films (Dread, The Final, The Graves, Hidden, Kill Theory, Lake Mungo, The Reeds and Zombies of Mass Destruction) in this horror film series separately, but you know you're just going to end up watching them all. Why not embrace it?
Also out this week:
talhotblond
This Dateline-esque doc chronicles a chat-room love triangle turned bloody.
Free Willy: Escape From Pirate's Cove
We'd much rather see Willy escape from The Cove, the one in Japan where they kill all those dolphins.
Red Cliff (International Version)
Also available in a bastardized American edit.
Carny
Not to be confused with the 1980 Carny, this 2009 film has Lou Diamond Phillips fighting a Jersey Devil.
The Black Balloon
Dissociative identity disorder survivor Toni Collette has to deal with an autistic son.
Supervan
This 1977 flick about a solar-powered van entering an auto rally helped usher in the modern "green" era. ...No, not really.
