I Want My DVD: Tuesday, March 30, 2010

It may seem silly to us now, but mark my words, one day there will be a Sherlock Holmes Meets Alvin and the Chipmunks movie, and no one will even blink.

Sherlock Holmes (Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack)
Despite being so massively overhyped that it seemed destined to disappoint, this re-interpretation of the famous London detective was actually still incredibly entertaining, helped out by Robert Downey Jr. wearing disguises and doing kung-fu, Jude Law wearing a mustache and acting superior and Rachel McAdams wearing little and being a saucy minx. (And if you like Mark Strong as the bad guy in this movie, we highly recommend checking him out in the upcoming Kick-Ass.) The single-disc edition doesn't have much in the way of extras (just a lone doc), but the combo has the DVD plus all the cool in-movie stuff on the Blu-ray. It might be time to upgrade. (Also available via Movies on Demand as of this week.)

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel
That's the problem with Hollywood these days: too many Squeakquels. But we'll forgive this one because it adds Zachary Levi (Chuck) to the cast, as well as the Chippettes, who sing "Single Ladies," because it's now a law that every movie has to feature the song at least once. Scorcese is having a fit about that one. (Also available via Movies on Demand as of next week.)

An Education
We know this movie is Oscar-nominated and all, but could it have a more dull title? Who wants to see a movie about education? At least Bad Education had the implication that the education had gone horribly wrong.

Alice in Wonderland (Un-Anniversary Edition)
And a very merry un-perfect timing to you, Disney, for releasing this DVD nearly four weeks after the live-action remake/sequel did gangbusters. Or is this exactly when you meant to release it? How is a raven like a writing desk?

The Baader Meinhof Complex
A German film about the formation and first ten years of the Red Army Faction. Mit Bruno Ganz as Horst Herold! Wunderbar!

Also out this week:
Yes Men Fix the World If Jackass targeted corporate America instead of the 'rents, they'd be the Yes Men.
I Sell the Dead In between corpse-making gigs on Lost and Flashforward, Dominic Monaghan stole them in this quirky indie horror film.
Smash Cut Hey, how's that non-adult film career working out for you, Sasha Grey?

An Education was a really good (if a little creepy) movie, and the title fits it perfectly. I highly recommend it.

The Baader Meinhof Complex is just now out on DVD? Weird. It's been showing on cable for a while now.

Can't wait to see Sherlock Holmes! I missed it when it was in theaters, so I'm really looking forward to it.
