I Want My DVD: Tuesday, March 9, 2010

Now that we've celebrated the Oscar nominees this past Sunday, it's time to go buy them! Two Best Picture candidates finally come out today, and they make the rest of the week's releases look like a sea of mediocrity in comparison.

Up in the Air
Truly deserving of its Best Picture nomination, Up in the Air features a charming and thoughtful performance by George Clooney, and the two supporting actresses in the movie are also pretty great, as evidenced by their double nomination. And the film itself is pretty damn hysterical, considering how much it deals with the realities of getting fired. It helps that they start off by firing Zach Galifianakis. (Devastatingly hilarious!)

Precious, Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire
Due to space restrictions, the producers opted not to use the formal title of this DVD, which is Precious, a DVD Recording of the Movie Also Known as "Precious," Which, if You'll Remember, was Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire. (It does, however, fit on the Blu-Ray.)

Boondock Saints II: All Saints' Day
Finally, the long-awaited sequel to the cult classic shoot-'em-up! Willem Dafoe doesn't return for this one, but nearly everybody else does, and so do all of their handguns. If you enjoy this new entry in the Boondock Saga, be on the lookout for the upcoming sequels, Boondock Saints III: Saints Alive! and Boondock Saints IV: When the Saints Go Marching In.

Planet 51
On an alien world, humans are the aliens! This movie better teach kids about the importance of racial tolerance or something, because otherwise this just seems like a waste of computer processing time and Dwayne Johnson's innate talent.

Old Dogs
John Travolta and Robin Williams are making it very difficult for me to complete my Seth Green film library. Maybe someday I'll be able to bring myself to pay money for this movie, but until then there will be an Old Dogs-shaped hole on my shelf, between Knockaround Guys and Party Monster.

Also out this week:
Capitalism: A Love Story This documentary is rated "R" for strong sexual content.
Hachi: A Dog's Tale This movie is rated "WTF," for Richard Gere playing with a puppy.
Paris Melanie Laurent from Inglourious Basterds has a role in this interconnected French romance.
Tapeheads A young John Cusack and Tim Robbins as obsessive video collectors. Triple-nostalgia!
Fix Olivia Wilde has one day to raise the money to get a friend to rehab -- no, not House.
