Independence Day: Other Patriotic Holidays They Could Base the Sequels On

When we heard that plans were in the works for two sequels to the sci-fi blockbuster Independence Day, both starring Will Smith, one thought crossed our minds: How will they abbreviate it? The original was inexplicably shortened to "ID4," so the next one would be, what, "ID4:2"? "ID4B"? "ID5"? Then we realized, who said it had to take place on the Fourth of July? After all, what are the odds that a battle with aliens would take place on the same day of the year twice in a row, let alone three times? Slim to none. However, to maintain the appropriate level of patriotic fervor, it's gonna have to take place on some sort of patriotic holiday. After all, how else will we convince the rest of the world to celebrate our holidays unless aliens attack on them? Here are our suggestions for some red, white and blue sequels.

President's Day
Plot: In the aftermath of the alien attack, the U.S. government has harvested enough technology to build their own spacecraft. They've also discovered a chart that shows the last planet the ship visited -- a planet where the aliens still maintain a colony. What's more, while their king was aboard the destroyed mothership, the alien Queen is still on that remote planet, with her own armada. Realizing that there's nothing stopping the aliens from coming to Earth again, and remembering that his wife was killed in the initial attack, the President authorizes a first strike, sending an elite team of pilots, led by Will Smith, to hit the aliens where they live.
Tagline: "They killed the First Lady -- big mistake."

Memorial Day
Plot: After all of the alien ships crash, most of the remaining creatures on board are killed, executed out by soldiers at their respective crash sites or taken away for experimentation. But America is one of the few that takes prisoners and puts them on trial for war crimes. When over a hundred alien soldiers are found innocent, the government places them in an internment camp in the Arizona desert, near a small town that lost several of its citizens in the war. As anti-alien forces begin to gather in the town, tensions run high, and camp director Will Smith must defend America's greatest enemies from its own citizens.
Tagline: "America never forgets. But sometimes it forgives."

Veteran's Day
Plot: Twenty years after the War of Independence Day, soldiers from around the world who fought in the war are marching in a Veteran's Day parade through New York City when the city is suddenly attacked by aliens! It's the second wave of aliens, and this time they knew the same trick wouldn't work, so they decided to take us by surprise, establishing a beachhead in the Big Apple. As New York falls to the invaders, a small group of over-the-hill soldiers from various countries, led by Will Smith, must make their way uptown to take out the alien command center.
Tagline: "They served their countries. Now they have to serve their planet."

Flag Day
Plot: Investigating the crashed alien ships, U.S. soldiers find the flag of the alien race, which bears an uncanny resemblance to the U.S. flag. Further research of their culture finds more parallels with American society, until the startling realization is reached -- the aliens are highly evolved humans, sent into space at some point in our future, mutated in some sort of dimensional warp and thrown back millennia, where they developed the technology that they used against their foes and became a completely different race of beings. Hoping to undo all of the devastation, Will Smith wants to stop an imminent mission to space that could be the origin of the invaders. But when NASA goes rogue, he'll have to stop the mission the hard way.
Tagline: "We have met the enemy, and he was us."
