BLOGS
If you were still awake after the Oscars ended last night, you may have caught Robert Downey Jr. on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where he debuted a brand-new Iron Man 2 trailer. Whether you're a comic book fan or a Robert Downey Jr. fan, this trailer is must-see material, since it showcases a lot more fun lines from the movie, as well as some major plot points and details. Here are our six favorites.
1. ScarJo Steps Into the Ring
While the people cutting the trailers still don't seem to want to let Scarlett Johansson talk (Is she that bad? Do they not want us to know that she's Russian?), they did show her character, Natasha, stopping by Tony Stark's boxing session to get something signed, because she's apparently a notary public. When she leaves, Stark turns to his assistant-and-maybe-still-girlfriend Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) and says "I want one." She immediately says "No," but we later see Stark letting Natasha test-fire an Iron Man gauntlet, as well as the now-familiar footage of Natasha kicking ass in a black jumpsuit. Comic fans know why, but let's leave a little mystery for the noobs.
2. Mickey Rourke's Accent and Hair
Not only does Rourke give good Russian, his character Ivan Vanko looks like a dangerous dude. Even without his electric whips, which crackle with lightning discharges as he advances on a helpless Stark, he's still got a ton of tattoos and silver teeth. He almost ruins the look by showing up for a meeting with Justin Hammer with his hair up in this crazy tousle that makes him look even more like an artsy hair stylist than before, but somehow it works. Or maybe we're just too scared to laugh.
3. Sam Rockwell is Definitely a Super Villain
We knew he took his arms business lightly -- we last saw him selling weaponry while sucking on a lollipop -- but Rockwell's Justin Hammer revealed himself as pure evil when we saw him taking his lunch at a fancy cafe table in the middle of a spotless white airplane hangar with his private jet behind him. That's, like, Bond villain territory. No sane man does that, no matter how rich they are.
4. Mass-Production Iron Man Armors
At one point, we see newly hired Vanko working on a line of slate-grey Iron Man suits, some of which we possibly see on stage at Hammer's arms show, and some of which may be among the army of armors that attack Iron Man and Don Cheadle's James Rhodes (wearing the War Machine armor). This is something Iron Man fought for a long time in the comics, so it's cool to see his nightmares becoming reality. Sadly, we don't see Vanko/Whiplash in one of the suits, but, c'mon, you know it's gonna happen.
5. The Sam Jackson Stare
During a meeting with Jackson's Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD, Stark reads a criticism of himself in the newspaper: "Mister Stark displays textbook... narcissism?" In response, Fury simply stares at him with his one good eye and his one always-judging eyepatch. Stark senses agreement. Good call, Stark.
6. Briefcase Iron Man!
In the old Iron Man comics, Stark was able to keep the Iron Man armor in a briefcase, and while that may have been pushing it a little bit, the film has found a way to pay tribute to it in the film. When caught in the open by Whiplash at a Formula 1 race, Stark pulls out a red, shiny briefcase, which unfolds into a red-and-silver suit of telescoping armor. Not only is it a tribute to the briefcase armor, it's a tribute to the red-and-silver armor Iron Man wore in the 1980s. As the final scene in the trailer, it undoubtedly triggered a worldwide nerdgasm.
