For the second weekend in a row, Martin Scorsese's psychological horror-mystery Shutter Island is at the top of the box-office chart. It seems positive word of mouth has kept it alive, although a 45% drop-off to $22 million has placed it just above Kevin Smith's latest, the buddy comedy Cop Out. While $18.5 mill is nothing to sneeze at for a Kevin Smith opening (it's almost double what Zack & Miri and Clerks II opened at), you'd think an action comedy with cop-movie legend Bruce Willis and hot comedy star Tracy Morgan would be #1 at the box office, right?
The weekend's other big opening, The Crazies, came in third place with $16.5 million -- not bad for a zombie outbreak movie by the director of Sahara and the star of Hitman. At least they can brag that they beat Avatar. Granted, Avatar is in its 11th week, and it still came in 4th place with $14 million, but it's gotta feel pretty good, anyway. (That makes $2.5 billion worldwide for Avatar, for those keeping track at home.) Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief came in fifth with $9.8 million, putting its box office total in a range that might just be high enough to warrant making a sequel based on one of the four remaining books. Could the search for the next Harry Potter be over? Please, God, I hope so. I'm tired of seeing teenagers getting drawn into dangerous magical situations.
A couple of romances filled the sixth and seventh spots: ensemble love-in Valentine's Day made $9.5 million and Nicholas Sparks weeper Dear John made $5 million. While The Wolfman could also be considered a romance, it could also be considered a bit of a disappointment, as it only made $4 million in its third week and $57 million overall. Even with $63 million from overseas, it still hasn't made back its sizable budget, likely due to a dark and fairly predictable story that led to a dramatic drop-off in the second week. Universal may have to satisfy themselves with having made a timeless horror classic, if not necessarily a sequel-spawning franchise. After seeing The Mummy 2 and 3, I'm totally fine with that.

1. Shutter Island $22 million ($75 million in 2 weeks)
