Date Night: No, It's Not The 30 Rock Office

I know, I know -- Steve Carrell and Tina Fey sounds like a match made in Heaven. I thought so, too. Who doesn't love 30 Rock, when it doesn't rely too much on guest stars, and who didn't love The Office back before it had slowly begun eating its own tail, like the Midgard Serpent? Sadly, this is not 30 Rock: The Movie, nor is it even a recent, sub-par episode of The Office. This is a movie featuring the stars of Baby Mama and Evan Almighty, and as such it is nowhere near as funny as I half-hoped it would be.

Not that I thought it was going to be that funny. I was well aware that the movie was a wacky comedy about a married couple, the Fosters, who go into the city for dinner and steal a reservation, only to be mistaken for the couple they stole it from, and threatened at gunpoint to turn over something they don't have. It's a formulaic mistaken-identity plot, and yet another in a long line of "up all night" movies. (see our list here for a dozen similar examples). A serious, Hitchcockian take on the story might have been interesting, but a slapstick action flick?

To be fair, Tina Fey and Steve Carrell look like they fit together. You almost believe them as a long-married couple settled into a routine and looking to break out. And Fey channels a little bit of Liz Lemon into her role via her character's love of food, although Carrell's tired, responsible character is almost the opposite of Michael Scott. But the two of them have been placed into a movie where the story is not just formulaic -- it's not very well written, either. Aside from some gems of dialogue (most of which appear in the trailer) and a few improvised lines you may have seen on Oprah, a lot of the dialogue is on-the-nose, cookie-cutter exposition, and it seems like some scenes exist only to give more screen time to the movie's other actors.

Should we mention the other actors? Taraji P. Henson is wasted as a cop who barely appears in the film, while Mark Wahlberg wears out his welcome as the constantly shirtless acquaintance who helps the Fosters out. Leighton Meester is boring as the babysitter, as is Common as a crooked cop. Kristen Wiig and Mark Ruffalo make a brief appearance as friends who are going through a divorce, but James Franco and Mila Kunis are infinitely more fun as the crazy couple whose identities the Fosters stole. Ray Liotta plays an older version of his Goodfellas self as a mob boss, and William Fichtner is just bizarre as a District Attorney. All in all, an entertaining supporting cast, but it's rare that any of them add much to the movie, and Carell and Fey needed all the help they could get.
