Harry Brown: Michael Caine's Craziest Role? Not By a Long Shot

In the new movie Harry Brown, Michael Caine plays a retired Royal Marine who sets out to avenge his only friend's death by killing the teenage hooligans who did the job. What follows is a bloody mix of Gran Torino and Death Wish, with Caine staying one step ahead of the ineffectual police as he acquires a gun and begins to work his way through the youths. Now, Caine is often cast as the roguish gentleman and the jolly, working-class type, but this is hardly the first psycho he's played. Luckily, we happen to love psycho Caine, so we thought we'd run down some of his craziest roles.

Get Carter (1971)
When his brother is found dead, a London gangster (Caine) returns to his hometown to find out who killed him. Caine then works his trade (murder) on the local crime boss and his henchmen, relentlessly hunting and brutally killing everyone connected with the crime. It was later remade with Sylvester Stallone, for no real reason we can fathom.

A Shock to the System (1990)
Passed over for a promotion, Caine goes a bit off his chump, and after accidentally killing a panhandler in the New York subway, he gets inspired to murder his way up the corporate ladder, as well as out of his miserable marriage. Apparently, killing is like Pringles?

The Hand (1981)
Caine plays a comic strip artist whose drawing hand is knocked clean off in a car accident, and the hand is never recovered. But when his replacement's work is vandalized and his enemies start turning up dead, he starts to wonder if maybe his severed hand isn't still out there somewhere, watching and plotting. Or, maybe he's effing bonkers.

On Deadly Ground (1994)
They say power corrupts, and this movie shows that power corrupts oil executives to think that they can take on Steven Seagal and live. Caine plays the CEO of an oil concern who pursues profit regardless of how many birds get oil on them, and he seems to be using some of that oil to dye his hair black.

Jaws: The Revenge (1987)
Caine's good-natured seaplane pilot character in this film may not be murderously crazy, but he's certainly ridiculous given that his nickname is "Hoagie," which is also a sandwich. Also, he's in a shark movie whose tagline is "This time, it's personal." Meaning the giant shark has a personal vendetta against the wife of his old enemy, Sheriff Roy Scheider, and is willing to follow her to the Bahamas to get his titular revenge. If Caine had also turned out to be a serial killer, we would not have been surprised.
