BLOGS
You hear that? That's the sound of a million geeks crying out. But whether it's a cry of happiness, anger or confusion depends on the geek, and that geek's specific feelings towards Marvel comic books and Joss Whedon. Word has come down that Whedon, the creator of Dollhouse and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, will direct the Avengers movie, and while many are intrigued at the possibilities, there are some who just don't see the logic. (To be fair, Whedon's an experienced Marvel Comics writer and also wrote and very nearly directed a Wonder Woman movie, so this isn't the craziest idea we've ever heard.) As for us, we're mainly wondering about which members of his talented acting stable may make appearances in the film. Although half the movie is already cast (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, etc.), there are plenty of other classic Avengers and Avenger villains that could be used to round out the story. Here are the past Whedon stars that we'd cast:
Sarah Michelle Gellar - Ms. Marvel
Blonde, tough, looks good in tights -- we say get the artist formerly known as Buffy back on the big screen in the role of this former Air Force pilot infused with alien DNA and given the power of flight and super-strength,
Nathan Fillion - Wonder Man
Former Fireflier Fillion is already playing a smug, full-of-himself celebrity with a heart of gold on Castle, so why not cast him as the safari-jacket-wearing Hollywood actor who's also an ion-powered Avenger?
Summer Glau - The Scarlet Witch
From River on Firefly to Bennett on Dollhouse, Glau has always played roles that were mysterious and spooky, so why not cast her as the hex-powered mutant witch (and daughter of X-Men foe Magneto) who turns over a new leaf to become a troubled heroine?
Fran Kranz - Quicksilver
Another villain-turned-hero, the super-fast mutant Quicksilver is actually the fraternal twin of the Scarlet Witch, and can be a little haughty. Kranz played holier-than-thou with ease as Topher on Dollhouse, and has been known to speak pretty fast when the role calls for it.
Alan Tudyk - Ant-Man/Giant-Man
Nobody plays technical geniuses (Firefly, Dollhouse) and violent lunatics (V, Dollhouse) like Tudyk, so we say cast him as the shrinking-and-enlarging Hank Pym, whose proprietary Pym Particles help shrink to microscopic size as well as grow into a goliath.
Charisma Carpenter - The Wasp
As Cordelia on Buffy and Angel, Carpenter loved fashion, so we think she'd be great as the fashion designer Janet Pym (née Van Dyne), who pops her husband's particles to shrink down to stinging size as the Wasp. Both Janet and Cordy came from snobby backgrounds, after all.
Tahmoh Penikett - The Vision
Having been mind-wiped and reprogrammed on Dollhouse, Penikett would be perfect to play the emotionless android known as the Vision. He found love with a faux Miracle Laurie, so surely robo-Penikett can learn to love Summer Glau.
Adam Baldwin - Hawkeye
Cocky? Check. Aggressive? Double check. Wants to be in charge? Triple check. Baldwin played the insolent subordinate well as Jayne on Firefly, and he's currently a deadly sharpshooter on Chuck, so it's only natural that he don the purple togs to play archer-turned-Avenger Hawkeye.
Anthony Head - Jarvis
Yes, Jarvis is the butler, and Head is accustomed to playing kings. But Michael Caine did wonders with Alfred in the Batman movies, and Jarvis is no slouch, either. He's ex-RAF, and a boxing champ to boot, and the Avengers Mansion doesn't get your garden-variety solicitors, you know. This guy has to slam the door on supervillains.
James Marsters - Kang the Conqueror
Every movie needs a villain, right? He's played space-faring supervillains before, on Smallville and in Dragon Ball Z, so why not cast our favorite vamp Spike as the time-traveling, world-conquering Kang? Why is that even a question?
