Titans Releases the Kraken in Wave of Box-Office Domination

This weekend's theatrical releases featured a true clash of the box-office titans. In one corner, you had the big-budget remake of the swords-and-scorpions epic; in the other corner, you had Tyler Perry; in the third corner, you had Miley Cyrus in a Nicholas Sparks movie. But did anyone doubt that Clash of the Titans, with the support of the entire Greek Pantheon (and a sizable ad budget), would win the day? It earned $64 million beginning on Thursday, and is already halfway to recouping its budget without even having opened overseas yet. While there may not be a Clash 2 in the making, we see a remake of the similarly gods-and-monsters-infused Jason and the Argonauts in the future. Release the army of skeletons!

Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married, Too? opened in second place, with $30 million, but last week's No. 1 film How to Train Your Dragon was close behind in third place, because it's not like any new, kid-friendly movies opened this week. That left the weepy Miley Cyrus romance The Last Song in fourth, with $25 million earned since Wednesday -- decent, but not exactly Hannah Montana numbers. Still, Miley has already almost caught up to Hot Tub Time Machine, which made another $8 million this week, so that's saying something. And Alice in Wonderland continued to earn in its fifth week, putting up another $8 million for a grand total of $672 million worldwide, making it the highest-earning film for the Tim Burton-Johnny Depp dream team. Eat it, Willy Wonka! And by "it," we mean delicious chocolate.

The Top Ten:
1. Clash of the Titans $61.4 million ($64 million since Thursday)
2. Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married, Too? $30.2 million
3. How to Train Your Dragon $29.2 million ($92.3 million in two weeks)
4. The Last Song $16.2 million ($25.6 million since Wednesday)
5. Alice in Wonderland $8.3 million ($309.8 million in five weeks)
6. Hot Tub Time Machine $8 million ($27.8 million in two weeks)
7. The Bounty Hunter $6.2 million ($49 million in three weeks)
8. Diary of a Wimpy Kid $5.5 million ($46 million in three weeks)
9. She's Out of My League $1.5 million ($28.7 million in four weeks)
10. Shutter Island $1.5 million ($123.4 million in seven weeks)

Did I just hallucinate A Week In Preview for a year or so? Thank God they are finally over. I probably seemed crazy!
