I Want My DVD: Tuesday, May 18, 2010

This week brings the drama, with heavy, Oscar-nominated films coming out alongside frothy confections that dissolve in your mouth. Plus, films from France, India, Japan and the wild, wild west.

Invictus
We're actually kind of disappointed that Clint Eastwood didn't appear in this movie himself, in addition to directing it. He would have made a great Mandela, squinting at those who question his ability to unite blacks and whites in a post-Apartheid South Africa, asking them if they feel lucky, then scaring off brawling gangs by pointing a rifle at them and telling them to get off his lawn. (Also available via Movies on Demand.)

Valentine's Day
Not to be confused with the David Boreanaz slasher movie Valentine. ...Actually, why don't you just go ahead and confuse them. It's pretty much a lose-lose situation. (Also available via Movies on Demand.)

Extraordinary Measures
Man, this movie would have looked so much better if Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser had been fighting Nazi mummies.

The Messenger
We're happy to see that America has rekindled its love affair with Woody Harrelson. As long as he stops acting out his roles on the paparazzi, he should be okay. Remember that time he solemnly told that photographer that a loved one had been killed in combat? Awkward!

The Spy Next Door
Please, please, please let this come in a two-pack with The Girl Next Door. Despite the difference in ratings, they sound like perfect companion films, although the plot of the one with Jackie Chan may need to be modified a bit. (Also available via Movies on Demand.)

The Girl on the Train
Catherine Deneuve stars in this movie about a girl who lies about an anti-semitic attack. Not as erotic as a French movie with that title could have been.

3 Idiots
Not a Three Stooges remake, just the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time in India. Think of it as Avatar, but with more music, romance and comas.

The New Daughter
When did Kevin Costner make this cool-looking horror movie? Was it before or after he made a movie with Dane Cook?

The Louis L'Amour Western Collection
Sadly, Leonard Nimoy has retired from acting, but you can still rediscover his old, non-Spock roles, like when he played a bounty hunter in 1971's Catlow opposite Richard Crenna and Yul Brynner. The other two TV-movies in this set, The Sacketts and Conagher, contain enough Sam Elliott to get you through a long, hard winter.

Apocalypse Now: Redux
After adding 49 more minutes of footage, Coppola reportedly settled on "Redux" after rejecting the titles Apocalypse Now: Bigger, Longer and Uncut and Apocalypse Now... & Laters.

Gamera: The Giant Monster (remastered)
Tokyo, 1962: "All right, boys, Toho's got this crazy dinosaur named Gojira, and he's killing us at the box office. We need our own monster! Anyone got any ideas?" "How about a giant turtle?" "Perfect! Turtles are naturally aggressive, and lethal predators! I want a man in a rubber suit by Thursday!"
