Welcome to Our Nightmare; America Flocks to New Elm Street

Freddy Krueger is the king of slasher cinema once again, with the re-booted A Nightmare on Elm Street taking in over $32 million in its opening weekend. Although it didn't do as well as Freddy vs. Jason did in its opening weekend, it's already made more money in theaters than four of the other seven Nightmares did overall, and had a bigger opening than the relaunched Halloween. Eat it, Rob Zombie!

The other new release, the boringly titled animal flick Furry Vengeance, was passed over by kids and families who either hadn't yet seen or wanted to re-watch How to Train Your Dragon. Dragon managed to snag a distant second place with $10 million in its sixth week, and Date Night and The Back-Up Plan were neck-and-neck for third with about $7.5 million each, leaving Furry in fifth place with $6.5 million, which is Losers territory.

The Top Ten:
1. A Nightmare on Elm Street $32.2 million
2. How to Train Your Dragon $10.8 million ($192.4 million in 6 weeks)
3. Date Night $7.6 million ($73.6 million in 4 weeks)
4. The Back-Up Plan $7.2 million ($23 million in 2 weeks)
5. Furry Vengeance $6.5 million
6. The Losers $6 million ($18.1 million in 2 weeks)
7. Clash of the Titans $6 million ($154 million in 5 weeks)
8. Kick-Ass $4.5 million ($42.2 million in 3 weeks)
9. Death at a Funeral $4 million ($34.8 million in 3 weeks)
10. Oceans $2.6 million ($13.5 million in 2 weeks)
