Get Him to the Greek: Sarah Marshall's Strung Out Little Brother

I belong to the camp of people who love Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Since Get Him to the Greek is a spin-off, my hopes were actually a little bit lower than usual, because I trust no one when it comes to tinkering with my guilty pleasures. Let's just say I've been disappointed.

But I'm pleased to announce that Get Him to the Greek was funny. It was also stupid, slightly frustrating, and not a good movie, especially compared to its predecessor, but I can't imagine anyone would see its trailer and expect anything else but to laugh. The plot is pretty straightforward and peppered with your typical series-of-unfortunate-events: Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) used to be the well-loved rocker we all remember from Sarah Marshall, but after he releases a horrible, offensive song, his career is ruined, his girlfriend leaves him, and he falls off the deep end. On the tenth anniversary of Snow's biggest performance, longtime fan and Capitol Records intern Aaron Green (Jonah Hill) is put in charge of transporting the drug-addicted former star from his London home to his sold-out show at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles.

I enjoyed Snow in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and it was fun to see his character fleshed out some more. Elisabeth Moss, who plays Aaron's girlfriend Daphne, was fantastic. Her portrayal of a young lady who works way too hard and chooses vegging out over going out is hilariously accurate, perhaps painfully to this writer. There' s also a handful of great cameos in the film, my favorite being from Metallica's Lars Ulrich. And Sean Combs (fine, Diddy) delivered some great lines, though it was confusing that he was playing a record executive, meaning that in Greek's reality, his music never existed. I am clearly over thinking this.

More over thinking: If there was any indication that I'm too big of a Wire fanatic, Greek's title has pushed me over the edge. Honestly, before I did any research for the movie, I assumed it was going to be about getting Snow to some crazy-ass drug lord to whom he is in great debt. While I was wrong, I was a little bit right, too, because this movie is like, 80% drug use. I'm personally not really into drug jokes, so I found those parts to be generally tedious, but based on the substantial guffawing of the people in my theater, I'm going to assume this movie successfully executed "people getting way too high" humor.

If I may pretend for a moment that this film deserves to be taken seriously, I do have some real critiques. The pacing was strange and inconsistent, with the main action sequence being oddly slow. There were also major continuity problems between Sarah Marshall and Greek, most glaringly with the presence of Jonah Hill. Hill's character was pretty memorable in the former, so it was bewildering that he played an entirely different (and not to mention, lead) character in the latter. It's a shame that he is the only actor in the world, isn't it? To his credit, though, he was funny and made Aaron extremely likable, and I'm sure most people will be able to get past it.

My biggest gripe is that there were absolutely no Jason Segel cameos, despite receiving a writing credit for creating the characters and serving as the film's co-producer. There was, however, (spoiler alert!) a great Kristen Bell cameo, which made me want to rush home and watch the original in all its glory. Actually, all things considered, it's no surprise that a brief callback to Forgetting Sarah Marshall ended up being one of the most memorable parts of the movie. It was a breath of fresh air between 109 minutes of heroin jokes.
