I Want My DVD: Tuesday, June 1, 2010

If you go chasing rabbits, and you know you're going to fall, tell them a hookah-smoking caterpillar has given you a call. Also, tell them you're hot new actress Mia Wasikowska, and you're there for your 3:30. (They may ask you to spell it.)

Alice in Wonderland (Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
The reviews might not have all been spectacular, and the 3-D may have left a lot to be desired, but you can't deny that Tim Burton made Alice his own. From Johnny Depp's china-doll Hatter to Crispin Glover's stretched-out Jack, and from Helena Bonham Carter's big-headed Red Queen to Anne Hathaway's gothic-lolita White Queen, it's the funhouse-mirror version of the classic tale. Leave it to Burton to take an already twisted story and make it even more twisted.

The Wolfman
Horror buffs were treated well by this gory remake of the 1940s classic, but it fizzled at the box office, perhaps due to its long shelf life and period setting. Too bad -- while the story had few surprises, there were some great action scenes, decent special effects and a hilarious explanation of why Benicio Del Toro, playing an Englishman raised in America, had a Puerto Rican accent. (Also available via Movies on Demand.)

Small Town Saturday Night
Will Chris Pine ever be able to play a role where he isn't immediately thought of as Captain Kirk? This movie will be the acid test, as Captain Kirk is torn between becoming a country singer in the Nashville quadrant or staying in his hometown with the Orion slave girl he loves. Nope, not happening.

The Three Musketeers/The Four Musketeers
Before Paul W.S. Anderson's remake gets off the ground, reacquaint yourself with the iconic 1970s version and its sequel, just re-released on DVD. Fun Fact: Directed by Help!'s Richard Lester, these films were originally meant to be one 3-hour movie, and were originally meant to star the Beatles. Why God denied us a lengthy historical epic with the Beatles wearing buccaneer boots, I have no idea.

The Red Baron
While this German war movie has a great cast, including Joseph Fiennes, Lena Headey and Til Schweiger, it is apparently factually inaccurate. We hear that it doesn't even mention the Baron's rivalry with Snoopy.

Also out this week:
Wild Things: Foursome Who exactly asked for Wild Things to have one sequel, let alone three?
Gotcha! Why has this awesome movie about a paintballer-turned-spy not been remade yet?
Kuffs If there is such a thing as a Christian Slater Classic, this is one.

Of course there's such a thing as a Christian Slater Classic. Have you never heard of "Heathers"? It's even a recap on this site, for Pete's sake.

A few films are made tailored for alternative venues, hitting theaters as made-for-Television films or direct-to-movie movies.
