The Hobbit: Peter Jackson's Directing Pro & Con List

One ring to rule them all. One ring to find them. One ring to bring them all in and New Zealand to bind them. That last part seems to be the sticking point in finding a director to take over helming duties on The Hobbit, which recently lost Guillermo Del Toro due to relocation issues. Other directors are willing to make the trip -- David Dobkin (Fred Claus), Brett Ratner (Rush Hour 1-3) and David Yates (three Harry Potter films) -- but two of those directors are awful. Besides, Warner Bros. and MGM both want Peter Jackson, the original man with the plan who made the Lord of the Rings trilogy into an Oscar-winning blockbuster. Jackson is holding out, citing prior commitments, but he also doesn't want to see the movie fail, or he loses money on the deal. To help him make a decision, we've put together a list of pros and cons for why he should or shouldn't take the job.

PRO: Since they're basically shooting in his backyard, Jackson can show up in his pajamas, and doesn't even have to wear shoes if he doesn't want to.
CON: At the end of the day, the afterparty always ends up in his living room, and someone usually vomits in his fireplace.

PRO: He'll make an obscene amount of money.
CON: He's already making an obscene amount of money as a producer and co-writer. In fact, there isn't even enough money left to pay the director a decent rate.

PRO: He'll get to work with his own special effects crew.
CON: Has to stare at Andy Serkis in a leotard covered with balls for extended periods of time.

PRO: He'll be reunited with master thespian Sir Ian McKellen, who plays Gandalf.
CON: Listening to McKellen's boring acting stories for another year. You try turning down a dinner invitation from that guy.

PRO: He co-wrote the scripts, so he knows the material is good.
CON: Tired of looking at the word "halfling." It just sounds funny if you say it too many times.

CON: He won't be able to start on his Tintin movie until after the two Hobbit movies are completed.
PRO: Everybody wants to see The Hobbit. Nobody gives a crap about Tintin.
