It's a commonly held fact that everything tastes better with bacon. Similarly, every movie is improved by adding Kevin Bacon -- the man is a fine actor, and he elevates every project he becomes involved in. So why hasn't he been drafted to appear in a superhero movie before this? I mean, we're glad he's going to be in X-Men: First Class, because we weren't sure if the movie was going to be any good, and now we know that it will at least be better. (We can even kind of picture him as Hellfire Club president Sebastian Shaw, which is who he's rumored to play.) But we wish he'd come in to class up superhero movies before now, because there are plenty of higher-profile ones that could have used a side of delicious Bacon. Here are six degrees we wish Bacon had on his comic-book movie transcript.
Ghost Rider (Ghost Rider)
Nothing in the world would have made Ghost Rider a good movie. It just had too much working against it: the dialogue, the plot, Eva Mendes, etc. But if Kevin Bacon had played perpetually lucky stuntman Johnny Blaze instead of Nic Cage, we wouldn't have prayed so hard for his head to burst into flames.
Bullseye (Daredevil)
Even though he wears a blue jumpsuit with a target on it, the icy, deranged assassin who makes Daredevil's life a living hell has become synonymous with death and grief in the comics. So why do we laugh every time we see Colin Farrell in that trenchcoat with the target carved in his forehead? They should have just put Bacon in a pair of tights and let him go all Hollow Man on Affleck.
Mr. Fantastic (The Fantastic Four)
Not only would Bacon have been a much more dynamic and grounded Reed Richards than Ioan Gruffudd, he also would have been a lot closer in age to Michael Chiklis, who played Reed's former college classmate Ben Grimm. Unfortunately, he could also be Jessica Alba's dad, but that's a Sue Storm casting problem.
Mr. Freeze (Batman & Robin)
Okay, so technically anybody would have been better as Mr. Freeze than Arnold Schwarzenegger. But Bacon would have been particularly great in the role of a cold, calculating scientist with a deep well of sadness and desperation. With Bacon on screen, we just might have stopped staring at Batman's nipples.
Deacon Frost (Blade)
We get that the Frost of the first Blade was meant to be a young rebel and rave enthusiast, planning a revolution in the vampire community, but was anybody ever scared of him? Even when he turned into a blood god? Bacon can look downright creepy when he wants to, and we're actually kind of stunned he hasn't ever played a bloodsucker.
Cyclops (X-Men)
In the original movie, James Marsden (age 26 at the time) came across as a little too young to be field leader of the X-Men. Maybe it was because the actress who played his girlfriend was a full decade older than him, or maybe it was just because we never once detected an ounce of authority coming off of the prettyboy actor. A 40-year-old Bacon in the role might have aged the character a bit, but it would also have embodied his no-nonsense, by-the-books attitude a lot better.
Do you think Kevin Bacon will make a good Sebastian Shaw? Or would you rather see him as Mr. Sinister? What other comic book character would you like to see him play? Let us know below, then see who we think should play Doctor Strange!
Check out the comic book movies that some think say never get made.
