BLOGS
You know it's a weak week for DVDs when the best American movie coming out is a new, deluxe edition of a Will Ferrell comedy. A very funny Will Ferrell comedy, true, but it's still sad. Luckily, there are a ton of foreign films coming out, too, and most of them feature gratuitous sex and violence. Week saved!
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy - The Rich Mahogany Edition (Blu-Ray)
Ferrell's last movie, The Other Guys made us laugh like we haven't since Anchorman, which puts us in the right frame of mind to appreciate this new, all-inclusive, Best Buy-exclusive set. Not only do you get the theatrical and unrated editions, plus the back-up feature Wake Up, Ron Burgundy, you also get a copy of Ron Burgundy's datebook, plus a pack of 12 Channel 4 News Team trading cards. I don't even have a Blu-ray player, and I still want to buy this thing.
Marmaduke
The comic-strip aficionado inside me refuses to let me forgive the makers of Marmaduke for not faithfully following the source material. Even though I couldn't give a damn about the comic strip Marmaduke. It's the principle of the thing, I guess. I'm sure that, if they ever make a Wizard of Id movie, I'll probably get mad that the guy who plays the king isn't two feet tall.
Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too?
The title of this movie enrages me on several levels. (Also available via Movies on Demand.)
Harry Brown
Michael Caine plays an aging former Marine who takes to the streets of his housing development to kick teenage ass when his friend is murdered. People are comparing it to Death Wish, but if you ask Caine, he'll probably tell you it's a sequel to The Dark Knight.
Red Riding Trilogy
An adaptation of The Red Riding Quartet series of novels, these three British films follow a series of murders in the 1970s and 1980s, and do not involve Little Red Riding Hood or werewolves. I feel cheated.
OSS 117: Lost in Rio
We can't quite wrap our heads around this French spy parody, given that it parodies 1950s and '60s spy films that were also called OSS 117 and has been deliberately filmed in that 1960s style. But I guess a lot of things we do confuse the French, too. Like The Pink Panther remakes.
9th Company
This Russian war movie is apparently totally inaccurate, and yet was a box-office success, making over seven million dollars. Tom Hanks doesn't even take a piss for that kind of money.
Monamour
The latest erotic film from Tinto Brass, the director of Caligula. Sorry, we couldn't find anything else from Italy.
