Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: Looking for the Most Fun Movie of the Year? Game Over.

When you look forward to a movie as much as I have been looking forward to Scott Pilgrim, you generally set yourself up to be disappointed. It doesn't always happen, of course -- Iron Man didn't disappoint me, although Watchmen did -- but I hoped that not reading the books would manage to keep my expectations in check. That's right, I'm not a raging Bryan Lee O'Malley fan, just an Edgar Wright fan. The director's last two films, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are at the top of my Favorite Films of All Time list, so nothing could keep me away from another of his brilliant blends of comedy, action, pop-culture references and killer music.

I don't know if it was Wright's unstoppable genius or my avoidance of the books, but whatever it was, Scott Pilgrim did not disappoint. Although many, many funny moments were ruined for me in the trailers, there were still plenty left to keep me laughing out loud through the entire movie. Michael Cera's Scott is a slacker, a whiner, a tool and an idiot, but he manages to walk the line of likability for a good 60% of the film, and even when he's unlikable, it's hard to stay mad at someone that dim for too long. But Cera is just there to give the rest of the cast someone to react to -- his bandmates tolerate him, his high-school girlfriend worships him, his sister pities him and his bandmate's ex despises him. (See who plays who here.) The mysterious Ramona Flowers is skeptical of him throughout -- even after they start dating, because, well, he's kind of an emotional basketcase, which isn't helped by the constant beatings from her exes.

Speaking of, the battles are all pretty amazing. We've seen clips of all of them, but in their complete forms they're truly epic. All of the exes deliver great performances, too, and the fights are sufficiently varied that they don't become repetitive. Wright certainly doesn't want you to get bored, changing locations in the middle of conversations and peppering the proceedings with flashbacks culled directly from the graphic novels. The soundtrack (which is streaming in its entirety here) is amazing, with great punk performances by Scott's band Sex Bob-omb as well as competing bands Crash and the Boys and The Clash at Demonhead, plus music by Frank Black, Beck and Broken Social Scene, as well as classic tracks by T-Rex and the Rolling Stones.

The trick to enjoying this film will be whether, like the film's supporting characters, you can accept the fact that certain characters can fly and levitate things with their minds and manifest giant dragons, and that, if you hit someone hard enough, he will turn into coins. It's an easy thing for a video game fan, maybe less so for a non-gamer. Regardless, gamers will certainly get the most enjoyment out of the film, as the omnipresent Nintendo-inspired graphics are supplemented by frequent discussions of Pac-Man's origins and visits to the arcade to play a DDR-style ninja arcade game. But as long as you know that Nintendos exist, and that video games are strange and wonderful things, you should enjoy it as much as the next person. ...Unless that person really hates Michael Cera, because that person is not going to have a good time, no matter what.
