Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The 10 Awesomest Movies About Fighting

By now, it seems everyone in the world must know the plot of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: in order to date the girl of his dreams, Scott must engage in physical combat with her seven evil exes. What follows is a tournament-style series of battles, as the exes become more powerful, and Scott has to use more advanced fighting techniques -- swords, bass guitars, amplifiers, etc. -- to defeat them. And while the video game references and supernatural aspects transform the film into something else entirely, at its heart it's still a fight movie, which automatically makes us think about all the great fight movies we've seen over the years. Here are some of the awesomest ones that give Scott Pilgrim a run for its money.

Enter the Dragon
Bruce Lee's final film has him going undercover at a martial arts tournament to investigate the organizer's drug trafficking. Not only do we get to see the film legend take on numerous opponents, including the claw-handed mastermind, but we also get to see Americans John Saxon and Jim Kelly take on other competitors, including Bolo Yeung. The movie was also parodied in The Kentucky Fried Movie as "A Fistful of Yen," which is equally awesome in its own way.

Kill Bill 1 & 2
Over the course of two films, we watch Beatrix Kiddo hunt down each member of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, her former teammates who left her for dead. One by one, she kills them, working her way up to their boss and her former lover, using swords, knives, fists and expository dialogue.

Bloodsport
Based on a real person's experiences facing off against a variety of fighters in an underground martial arts tournament, this is the closest Jean-Claude Van Damme will ever get to a biopic. Unless you count Timecop, which we hear is also based on a real guy.

The Quick and the Dead
An amazing cast (Hackman, DiCaprio, Crowe) and Sam Raimi's quirky direction make this movie about a quick-draw competition far more awesome than it has any right to be, especially considering it stars Sharon Stone.

Road House
While not about an organized tournament, per se, the bouncers in Road House make their living by fighting, and they do it wherever they have to -- in bars, on loading docks, by a lake, in a trophy room, etc.

Fight Club
The fighting in this film is almost incidental to the real story -- it's against the background of their home-grown, underground bare-knuckle boxing society that the main characters unleash their revolution. Although watching Edward Norton and Brad Pitt beat the hell out of each other is still a large part of the film's appeal.

Over the Top
This movie is over the top in more ways than one, as Sylvester Stallone plays a truck driver who only needs to turn his hat backwards and adjust his grip to defeat any arm-wrestler alive. Is there ever any doubt he'll make it to the final tournament to win a new big rig? No. No, there is not.

Highlander
There can be only one, and Clancy Brown does his best to make sure that happens, chopping his way through the various members of a race of immortals on his way to Christopher Lambert. Each duel ends with a decapitation and a lightning-fueled transfer of power, which is almost as awesome as the fights in Scott Pilgrim ending with the loser turning into coins.

Rocky IV
True, the first Rocky is a much better film than Rocky IV, but the latter has a scientifically engineered Soviet super-soldier who beats Apollo Creed to death before taking on a more old-fashioned (and much, much, smaller) Rocky Balboa. When even the Soviets start cheering for Rocky, the movie is officially awesome.

The Best of the Best
The Karate Kid (1980s version) is all well and good, but there's not a whole lot of fighting before the final tournament, which is mostly shown in montage. Best of the Best has a team of five guys each taking on the South Koreans in taekwando, and Eric Roberts wins his match with only one working arm. Yes, Julia Roberts' brother is a badass.
