Step Up 3D: A Very Fun Movie That Does Not Need a Plot, Yet Has One Anyway

Being an adult, I have not seen the previous two Step Up films. I do, however, watch So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing with the Stars and Dance Your Ass Off, so I'm basically a professor of dance by this point, and I can tell you that the dancing in Step Up: 3D is as entertaining as it is three-dimensional. So, a lot, on both counts. I'm not sure why the rest of it bothers, but obviously this movie wasn't exactly trying to revolutionize the genre.

It's weird, though, how these movies always make sure to have some ridiculously formulaic plot and characters and stuff. If they had just shown 90 minutes of dance battles with no dialogue whatsoever not only would no one care, the movie actually would have been better. But alas, Step Up: 3D has the obligatory and disappointing bad-actors-talking to dance ratio. I could give you detailed plot info, but who cares? The long and short of it is that a guy needs money so he and his dancer orphans (he's basically Fagin, it's weird) compete in dance contests to afford their dance lair. None of them can have jobs because they're too artistic, so they are just really lucky that New York City is always having underground dance battles with hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash prizes all the time (New York City is never having underground dance battles with hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash prizes) so they don't have to be dance-homeless.

But when they dance, it really is awesome, and in 3D even a little bit terrifying. Dance ninjas jabbing their hip hop karate chops in your face! I'm serious, it's kind of scary. But very cool, and although I would have given SYTYCD's Twitch a lot more to do and cast a lead girl who can actually dance hip hop convincingly (she's so white, and so contemporary and it is just so wack, there's no better word for it), it's a ridiculously fun movie. The 3D is done surprisingly well -- it looks like they filmed it in 3D, so no post-production conversion crapping up the place here -- and the choreography is fantastic. Personally, I'd just rent it and fast-forward through the talking, but if you're bored and have a need for the 3D, this is an experience almost worth the price-gouging ticket cost for once.
