BLOGS
Light-on-substance studio films and substance-crammed independent offerings battle it out for your hard-earned movie-renting dollars this week. Relax -- Amanda Seyfried is in one of each, so you're covered.
Letters to Juliet (Blu-ray/DVD combo)
Perhaps I was overly cruel when I first reviewed this movie. After all, the women who respond to the letters to Juliet are real, and they provide a valuable service, I suppose, so why not spotlight them? Granted, maybe they could have made the movie about one of the actual Juliets, rather than about an American girl who just sits in and volunteers for a couple of days, but then this movie would be in Italian. Of course, if it was in Italian, the dialogue would probably sound a whole lot better. (Also available via Movies on Demand.)
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (Blu-ray/DVD combo)
Speaking of dialogue, why does every actor in a period piece speak in a British accent, regardless of the setting? Jake Gyllenhaal is born a Persian street rat, but by adulthood he speaks like Prince Charles, just like the rest of the Persian aristocracy. Granted, most of the rest of the cast is British, so maybe he's just trying to blend in? Whatever, I'm sure it's game-accurate, but it's also stupid. But, on the bright side, he has a MAGIC KNIFE. And the first time he finds out it's magical, he uses it so many times it runs out of gas. Nice job, Gyllenhaal.
My Son My Son What Have Ye Done?
Wenre Herzog directing. David Lynch producing. A movie about an actor who loses his mind and kills his mother. Based partially on a true story. Starring Michael Shannon, Willem Dafoe, Chloe Sevigny and Laura Palmer's mother from Twin Peaks. Brad Dourif, Udo Kier and a little person in supporting roles. If there's a way for this movie to get any weirder, we don't know how.
The Black Cauldron: 25th Anniversary Special Edition
Maybe this special edition re-release will get people talking about revisiting this franchise as a series of live-action movies. Sure, it's not as popular as the Narnia series, but there were five books about the pig-keeper who goes up against an army of the undead, and we remember them as being pretty awesome. Plus, it's a chance to re-do Gurgi, who we always pictured looking like Wile E. Coyote.
Janeane Garofalo: If You Will
Everyone, male or female, who still has a crush on Janeane Garofalo from her days on The Ben Stiller Show and in Reality Bites will want to pick up her latest stand-up comedy special, in which she discusses sex, dogs and pop culture, which is presumably her version of "sex, drugs and rock 'n roll." Sure to be funnier than that season of 24 where she played an FBI analyst.
Princess Kaiulani
The beautiful, Swiss-Peruvian actress Q'Orianka Kilcher is running out of noble native royalty to play. After playing Pocahontas in The New World, she's now playing the Princess of Hawaii, who lost her kingdom in 1893, and died in 1899, at the age of 23. Is a Sacagawea movie next?
Just Wright
We get that Queen Latifah's character is named "Leslie Wright," but is there another reason for the play on words going on in this title? Because it sounds like there should be a "Three Bears" theme to the movie; like, Common tries three different physical therapists, but one is too rough, the other is too soft and only Queen Latifah is "just right." As far as we know, no such decision-making goes on in this movie. Why not Wright and Wrong, or The Wright Stuff, or Let the Wright One In? Or even Leslie is More? (Also available via Movies on Demand.)
Boogie Woogie
The cast of this art-world farce alone -- Gillian Anderson, Alan Cumming, Amanda Seyfried, Stellan Skarsgard, Christopher Lee, Danny Huston, Joanna Lumley, Charlotte Rampling -- makes it worth a rental. Or at least a reading of the plot summary on the back of the DVD.
