I Want My DVD: Tuesday, September 21, 2010

This week, Russell Crowe robs from the fun and gives to the mope.

Robin Hood (DVD/Blu-ray Combo)
Scientists have proven that this movie has fewer swashes buckled than any Robin Hood film ever made. Being an enemy of the king is Serious Business. No time for swinging on ropes from chandeliers and stuff. (Also available via Movies on Demand.)

Ondine
Colin Farrell plays an Irish fisherman in this movie, and when he nets himself a mermaid, he hopes that she can cure his daughter's failing kidneys. And if she can't, he'll clean her, cook her and eat her.

El Secreto de Sus Ojos
Who knew that the director of this Argentinian crime thriller, which won the Best Foreign Picture Oscar this year, had previously directed episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit? That certainly explains the Ice-T cameo.

Stomp the Yard: Homecoming
Did they drop the "2" from this movie's title? Because I can guarantee you that anyone with even the slightest interest in this movie is well aware that it's a sequel.

The Experiment
Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker star in this remake of a German movie about men who volunteer for a psychological trial involving prisoners and guards. Original title? Das Experiment. Why mess with das perfection?

On Blu-ray: American Beauty
The high point of Wes Bentley and Mena Suvari's careers, now in the majesty of Blu-ray.

On Blu-ray: The Peacemaker
Nicole Kidman plays the original sexy nuclear weapons specialist, two years before Denise Richards was in The World is Not Enough. Also: Clooney!

On Blu-ray: Charade (The Criterion Collection)
Fun fact: Universal Pictures forgot to put a copyright notice on this Cary Grant-Audrey Hepburn movie back in '63, so there are dozens of unofficial DVD releases, but the Criterion edition was the first official one. You can also get it unceremoniously glued to the back of The Truth About Charlie.

On Demand: Fantastic Fest Movies
In honor of the concurrently-running film festival, IFC Midnight is offering a quartet of this years' movies simultaneously: Primal, about campers who turn feral after a dip in a pond; Red, White & Blue, about an overly promiscuous woman in Austin; Heartless, about a gang of subhuman thugs in London; and High Lane, about amateur French mountain climbers who encounter more then they bargained for on an ill-fated expedition. Depending on where you live, it's cheaper than a ticket to Texas. (Available via IFC Midnight on September 22)

On Demand: Enter the Void
The director of Irreversible follows a brother and sister into the Tokyo club scene, and apparently your eyeballs melt from all the neon. (Available via IFC Midnight and in theaters September 24)
