I Want My DVD: Tuesday, October 12, 2010

One of the year's biggest hits and one of its biggest flops are both hitting DVD on the same day. Thanks, Galileo's law of falling bodies!

How to Train Your Dragon (Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
See the movie now -- not only because it's surprisingly enjoyable, but also so you'll know what's going on in the upcoming sequel, How to Make Your Dragon Fight Other Dragons in Sanctioned Tournaments, and Where to Buy the Trading Cards.

Jonah Hex
I may actually check this movie out, now that I don't have to go to a theater, or look up where it's playing, or expend any amount of effort at all. And yet, I'm still not sure it'll be worth it. (Also available via Movies on Demand.)

Leaves of Grass
Edward Norton plays two roles in this movie about a philosophy professor who gets wrapped up in his drug-dealing twin brother's madcap scheme. By the Van Damme film classification system, it's Norton's Double Impact.

The Hangover: Extreme Edition
This new edition of the instant comedy classic comes with a 28-page photo album, because nothing is more extreme than organizing and preserving your memories in book form. Also available: The Fight Club Scrapbook.

The Darjeeling Limited (Criterion Collection)
The inevitable Criterion edition of Wes Anderson's last live-action film is here, which makes one wonder why they even bother releasing Wes Anderson films without numerous documentaries and whimsically illustrated packaging.

Doghouse
In this British horror-comedy, a group of guys ditch their shrewish, clingy and domineering girlfriends for a weekend of chasing tail, but the town they pick has been wiped out by a horde of female zombies. Women, right?

Carnies
It's the Great Depression, and someone's killing carnies -- could it be the strong man? The snake handler? A depleted stock portfolio?

S&Man
A documentary about snuff films, which may be a little closer to actual snuff films than I want to get, personally. I still have uncomfortable dreams about 8mm, although that may have more to do with Nic Cage.

On Demand: Shadow
When an Italian horror film is described as "Jacob's Ladder meets The Descent," it instantly has my attention. (Starts Oct. 13 on IFC Midnight)

Also Out This Week:
I Am Love, Lost Boys: The Thirst, Santa Baby 2, White on Rice, Older Than America, and Arn: The Knight Templar.
