Life as We Know It: The Most Predictable Movie... Ever?

As far as shamelessly repetitive and unimaginative genres go, you can do worse than the "Childless-Urbanite-Inherits-a-Baby" one. Sometimes they're actually kind of funny, and even when they're not, there are far fewer of them than there are bad rom-coms and bad horror movies (clearly the two most shamelessly repetitive and unimaginative genres in existence) so you have less of a chance to accrue a white-hot hatred of them. Literally the bare minimum anyone asks for with these things is that you shake up the formula a little bit and do more legitimate screenwriting than taking the Raising Helen script and changing the character's names and locations and calling it a new movie. But, unfortunately, Life as We Know It didn't care to put in that much effort.

Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel play two people who hate each other's guts but have to hang out due to their mutual best friends, a couple with a new baby. After the couple dies suddenly in a car accident (Sidebar: one person in that couple is Christina Hendricks, and as much as I'm sure you can imagine the traumatic experience of having to deal with the idea of Joan Holloway being dead, you have no idea how traumatic that is, not like I do now), Heigl and Duhamel learn that they've inherited their baby, as the couple's parents are all conveniently too dead and/or unfit to parent. Not having the heart to put the child in foster care, they decide to move into their friends' house and raise the baby together like an extremely creepy facsimile of them. It's a rough go at first (baby diapers have poop in them! Ew!), but after a while they stop hating The Wiggles and start falling in love, and the movie ends with them living as a happy family, all issues resolved.

Shocking, right? And I swear to god, if you come at me in the comments for "revealing" that extremely common romantic comedy outcome (the very most common, in fact!), you are as stupid as this movie thinks you are. There is not one thing that happens in Life as We Know It that you couldn't guess just by looking at the poster. Babies are finicky eaters. Babies are into really terrible television shows. Poop is gross. Two people of the opposite sex who hate each other at the beginning of the movie love each other by the end. There are zany comedian sidekicks. And, above all, a clumsily wrapped up and poorly forced happy ending.

If Katherine Heigl is indeed serious about repairing her image, I'd start with making a movie in which she doesn't play a shrew who falls for a bad boy in some Xeroxed version of the previous movie she was in for once. Because at this point it just feels like she's in it solely to steal our money.
