I Want My DVD: Tuesday, November 2, 2010

It's a Pixar-palooza! Also, a Gooniepocalypse. And possibly an Eastwoodaclysm. But definitely a Cher-nobyl.

Toy Story 3 (4-Disc Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Combo)
If you didn't see this movie in the theaters, and therefore missed out on the emotional clearinghouse it provides, then now's your chance to rent it/buy it/download it or what have you. Pick up some tissues on the way home, because the tears of laughter and/or sadness will be a-flowin'. Heck, you might even squeeze a few out during the included short film, Day and Night. And if you pick up the ten-disc set of all three films, you might as well pick up a ShamWow. Also out this week: More Pixar goodness in the form of the Cars spin-off series Mater's Tall Tales. Whether you enjoy the blue-collar comedy stylings of Larry the Cable Guy or not, the character is hilarious and the imagination behind each episode is inspiring. Plus, the set comes with two never-before-seen episodes. Brand-new Pixar shorts? That's like pure liquid gold.

The Goonies (25th Anniversary Edition)
Normally, we wouldn't be so worked up over yet another release of The Goonies on DVD, but this new edition comes with more than just great extras. It also comes with two magazine reproductions -- one of the 1985 Goonies magazine, one of an Empire article from 2009 -- plus reproductions of storyboards and a brand-new Goonies board game. That's right, you can tell your beat-up copy of Parcheesi to suck it -- family game night just got Goonied.

Cher: The Film Collection
Has Burlesque reminded you how much you love Cher? Between her, Nic Cage, Olympia Dukakis and Danny Aiello, Moonstruck is a must-own, so you might as well get five other Cher movies with it, and this set includes Mermaids, Tea With Mussolini, Silkwood, Chastity and Good Times. They may not all be her finest roles, but they're certainly a fair representation of her body of work, as well as the best way to remember Sonny Bono.

Centurion
"History, only awesomer" was how I described this movie when I saw it in theaters, and while I'm sure the bloodthirsty ways of the Picts and Romans in this film are exaggerated for effect, I'll take them over a historically accurate episode of Deadliest Warrior any day.

Clint Eastwood: 35 Films, 35 Years
This prestigious boxed set of Eastwood-starring and Eastwood-directed films includes, among others, five Dirty Harry movies, four war pictures, three cowboy flicks, two Best Picture winners, two orangutan movies and one copy of Space Cowboys. Needless to say, it's a must-own.

White Christmas (Holiday Edition)
In case you always wondered what Clark Griswold meant when he said that they were gonna have the "hap-hap-happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny f$#%ing Kaye," watch this movie. Snowflakes will fall out of parts of your body you didn't think possible, and you may even hug a pine tree.

The Sound of Music (Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
Supposedly, the hills appear to be even more alive when viewed in high-definition.

Winnebago Man
I am still constantly amazed that somebody watched this viral video and said "I want to make a documentary about that angry, angry mobile home salesman."

Love and Distrust
...On the other hand, whoever found three short, love-themed films starring Robert Downey Jr., Robert Pattinson, James Franco, Sam Worthington and Amy Adams and put them together on one DVD is a frickin' genius.

On Demand: The Orgasm Diaries (a.k.a. Brilliantlove)
The erotic relationship between a photographer and a taxidermist is captured on film, then put on display, then made into a TV show on The CW, with disastrous results. (Available Nov. 3 via IFC Midnight)

On Demand: Beneath the Dark
Jamie-Lynn Sigler checks into a mysterious motel while on a road trip from Texas to L.A., and is forced to confront her own secrets, with disastrous results. (Available Nov. 3 via IFC Midnight)

Also Out This Week:
The Bridge on the River Kwai (Blu-ray), The Sound of Music (Collector's Giftset), White Christmas (Blu-ray), Highlander: Director's Cut (Blu-ray), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Blu-ray/DVD Combo) , Not of This Earth, The Bing Crosby Collection, Once Fallen..
