Leslie Nielsen, 1926-2010

Leslie Nielsen, 1926-2010

The world lost a great comedic actor in Leslie Nielsen this past weekend, and, if you're a fan of the classics, a great dramatic one, too. His chiseled, leading-man looks and professional demeanor suited his transition from sci-fi and dramas to deadpan comedy perfectly, and he continued to deliver for years, even if his efforts occasionally devolved into slapstick buffoonery. Overlooking the odd disastrous Mel Brooks collaboration, here's a guide to five of my favorite Nielsen performances.

Forbidden Planet
Back in his serious leading man days, Nielsen played spaceship captain John J. "J.J." Adams, leading a rescue expedition to a colony on Altair IV. Sure, he had to deal with robots and invisible monsters, but there were moments of levity in his interactions with the uninhibited teenage daughter of the colony's sole survivor.

Airplane
The role that changed the course of his career, Nielsen was lampooning his own serious roles, like that of the ship's captain in The Poseidon Adventure, with his performance as the deadpan Dr. Rumack. So, so many great quotes. "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley." "I just wanted to tell you both good luck. We're all counting on you."

Police Squad!
Before the Naked Gun films, Police Squad! was a short-lived TV series on ABC. Many of the jokes were recycled for the films, but the show's half-hour lampooning of 1960s crime procedurals was sheer brilliance, so naturally it only lasted six episodes. Ain't that always the way? Nielsen's clueless, tactless Frank Drebin may be a movie icon now, but he should have been a TV icon years before.

Repossessed
As the stand-in for Max Von Sydow in this parody of The Exorcist (starring original exorcism recipient Linda Blair), Nielsen plays Father Mayii, lured out of retirement for a televised rematch with the Devil, Rocky-style. Classic Nielsen, and much more worth your time than Dracula: Dead and Loving It.

Scary Movie 3 and 4
I know, I know, there's only so much Anna Faris and Charlie Sheen one can take, but you'd do well to just fast-forward over the non-Nielsen parts to see him as a Drebin-esque president who punches people he thinks might be aliens and refuses to abandon a children's book in the face of an emergency.

What's your favorite Leslie Nielsen movie? It's Spy Hard, isn't it? I knew it. Let us know below, then check out our holiday movie preview!

I hurd someone tell me once that those who can bring a crowed of people all together in one place and enjoy a good laugh, song or show and have nothing but the feel of happiness and joy once it was all over that that person will surely find his place sitting close to god. Well Mr Nielsen congratulations for a job well done and thank u for bringing us all together to enjoy the many laughs and smiles you put on our faces, while your time was short your memories will be here with us always you will be deeply missed by many.

I have been surfing online more than 3 hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours. It is pretty worth enough for me. In my view, if all website owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the net will be a lot more useful than ever before.

I'd say he was one of the funniest Men of all time, with his sardonic humor,,especially in "Airplane"..To me,, he stole the whole movie with his off the wall humor,,,,and he kept saying more and more funnier lines as the movie went thru,,and to be against the good actors that were in the movie also,,,he stood out in the whole movie,,,,especially when he said "Dont call me Shirley". ommmmg thats was great! and then to continue with the rest of the movies he made,, the Naked Gun Moives... He played a Naiive officer,, like he didn't know what to do,, when he got in trouble,,, He played that well,,,Mr Nielson,, we are gonna miss you!!! Rest in Peace.........and Thanks for your awesome roles tooo!!!!!!!
