BLOGS
The nominees for this year's Golden Globes -- given out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association -- have been announced, and there are a few surprises, which is always going to happen when you have separate categories for dramas and comedy/musicals, and when entertainment reporters from other countries are involved. Some of them have crazy tastes in movies. They're French! Among other nationalities!
That said, there's no arguing with the five nominees for Best Drama -- Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The King's Speech and The Social Network. Okay, you may argue that Inception is overrated, but they were all incredibly well-received, although they effectively blocked out plenty of other movies that might have been on the cusp. True Grit, The Town, 127 Hours, The American, Get Low and Winter's Bone may not have had a chance here, but their American settings and themes may hold more sway with Academy members come Oscar time, when they have ten spots to choose from, and comedies will get passed over, as usual.
Speaking of comedies: holy cow. Alice in Wonderland for Best Comedy or Musical? Red? Burlesque?!??!? Sure, those movies were fun and all, but it's hard to think of any of them as award-winning. Although Burlesque was pretty much the only musical to come out this year, besides Tangled. Are animated films not eligible in this category? The Kids Are All Right is actually a great movie, but The Tourist is just bad, and barely qualifies as a comedy. I would have rather seen Due Date or The Other Guys up here, but again, probably not high on the list of the foreign press. I'm surprised the British terrorist comedy Four Lions didn't make it, though.
In the acting realm, The Fighter has four nominees in three categories, which puts them one better than the similarly nominated The King's Speech. Both are pretty amazing casts, so good for them. I'm glad Helena Bonham Carter got nominated. Michael Douglas managed to get a Supporting Actor nod for Wall Street 2, which I'll grudgingly admit is deserved, because that movie was awful, but I'm wondering if Mila Kunis coasted into her Best Supporting Actress nod on the basis that Black Swan is a pretty amazing film, and she stands next to Natalie Portman for most of it. And kudos to Johnny Depp for landing two nominations in the same category (Best Actor - Comedy)! The Mad Hatter nomination is surprising, but I'd give it to him for that before The Tourist. Blargh.
