Nicole Kidman has been nominated for Best Actress by both the Screen Actors Guild and the Foreign Press Association for her role in Rabbit Hole, and with good reason. She manages to stay on the brink of tears for the entire movie, holding back her emotions as she tries to eliminate every trace of her dead son's existence, and it's hard to look away, just in case she lets go while you're fishing for that last Junior Mint. There are other good performances in the film, as well, but Kidman is certainly the standout, and since the story, what little of it there is, is mostly an exercise in grief management, her performance is pretty much the only draw here. Luckily, it's enough.
Kidman plays Becca, the mother of Danny, who died eight months ago at the age of four, hit by a car when chasing the family dog into the street. Aaron Eckhart plays her husband Howie, who is equally devastated, but copes by watching videos of Danny every night on his phone and going to group therapy, which Becca cannot stand. Dianne Wiest plays Becca's mom, who also lost a son, to heroin, but is rebuffed whenever she tries to talk to Becca about it. Tammy Blanchard plays Becca's sister Izzy, who drifts through life dating musicians and getting in fights, and is afraid to tell her sister she's pregnant. She's not the only one who tiptoes around Becca -- some old friends still haven't called, even after eight months, because they don't know what to say. Also, the whole on-the-brink of tears thing.
Becca and Howie's differing approaches to dealing with their grief -- reminiscing and avoiding -- lead to fights, sometimes about who's to blame, but mostly about what to do next. The dog has been shuffled off to Becca's mom's. Should they sell the house? While Howie tries to talk things out with his group therapy friends, including Sandra Oh as an eight-year veteran, Becca starts following the teenage boy who hit Danny, who now rides the bus every day and is working on a comic book about parallel realities. Miles Teller, who plays Jason, gives an awkward performance, full of odd confessions and sudden apologies, and his elaborately drawn wormholes to other worlds are frequently shown and referenced, bringing to mind the discussions of time travel in Donnie Darko. Unfortunately, there are no watery tentacles to undo everything that's gone wrong in his life, and Becca's.
Things look bleak for the couple at one point, but I'll spoil that they do get better -- I wouldn't want anyone to avoid the film because it's a downer. Okay, the ending is far from triumphant, but it shows that life will go on for these two, somehow. And, thank God, there's plenty of humor throughout the film, from their mockery of their fellow group-mates to their awkward interactions with society at large, and Dianne Wiest, as the wine-loving, slightly accented matriarch, is occasionally hilarious in her ramblings about the Kennedys and other subjects. Come for the despair, but stay for the laughs.

I am sorry to say that the movie never got out of low gear for me.I thought Sandra Oh just stole the movie with her, her husband, and Howie trio was a much better story that almost happened.
